Painting Gender, Constructing Theory, The Alfred Stieglitz Circle and American Formalist Aesthetics

Creator: Marcia Brennan | Art - 2002-09-09

Chapter 2 Faith, Love, and the Broken Camera Alfred Stieglitz and New York Dada It seemed like a tribute, but it wasn't. On the cover of the July- August 1915 issue of 291 was Francis Picabia's "portrait" of Alfred Stieglitz (fig. 2.1).

Publisher: MIT Press

About this book
After the closing of his first art gallery in 1917, photographer Alfred Stieglitz reemerged in the New York art world in the 1920s. He achieved his comeback in large part through the innovative means he used to promote himself and the artists of his inner circle. Stieglitz and a number of well-established critics drew on period conceptions of sexuality, gender, and cultural identity to characterize the artists he championed as the fulfillment of a shared vision of a vital, nonrepressed American art.In Painting Gender, Constructing Theory, Marcia Brennan examines how Stieglitz and the critics drew on early-twentieth-century discourses on sex and the psyche, particularly the theories of Sigmund Freud and Havelock Ellis, to characterize the artworks of the Stieglitz circle. Critics routinely described the often highly abstracted paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Demuth as transparent displays of the most intimate aspects of the self, taking both subject matter and painterly form to be guided by the artist's own gendered and psychic energies.Focusing on the key historical criticism and artworks, Brennan shows how the identities of all five Stieglitz circle artists were presented in terms of the masculinity and femininity, and the heterosexuality and homosexuality, thought to be embedded in their work. Brennan also discusses Stieglitz's relation to competing artistic and critical movements, including Thomas Hart Benton's regionalist art and Clement Greenberg's reformulation of formalism. Arguing that American formalist criticism consisted of a complex and paradoxical mixture of corporeality and disembodied transcendence, Brennan provides insight not only into the works of the Stieglitz circle but into the development of formalist criticism itself.

0 4/5 book babe (CA ,USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: 5 Broken Cameras (DVD) I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Slowly and painfully, with injustice heaped upon injustice, yet they keep trying to raise their children with dignity. Very moving. My only criticism is that the subtitles are often hard to read. An easy fix. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 18, 2013

    Piece of junk

I bought one of these to mount my GoPro camera to my bicycle handlebars. I bike almost exclusively on the streets of New York City for recreation and commuting. For a few weeks it worked, but often came loose. I had to keep tightening it to keep it in the same position. I eventually wrapped some electrical tape around the handlebar to give the mount more to grab on to. That improved things a great deal, but not perfectly. Then one day the mount broke. The plastic piece that allows the camera to be mounted 90 degrees rotated from the mount itself just snapped. The camera just popped off my bike. Luckily I noticed and picked the camera up off the ground. It was safe in the shell, but the mount was toasted. I filed a ticket with GoPro, and they replaced the broken piece free of charge.Just days after getting the new piece the camera broke again. I didn't even realize it at the time. I actually had to backtrack five blocks and was lucky to find my camera at all. Of... 1/5 Scott Rubin (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, June 25, 2012

Works but could be more rugged.

0 3/5 Lyle Landstrom (Moorhead, Minnesota) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: GoPro Handlebar Seatpost Mount (Electronics) When using this to mount my GoPro camera, one of the sections broke due to a fatigue failure of the plastic. The problem is caused by the camera vibrating at the end of the bracket causing it to eventually break. I now need to replace the mount and the camera housing. Amazingly the camera still works after flying off my bike at 60 mph. One other problem is the screws that are inside the adjusting knob will sometimes not spin with the knob when trying to tighten the bracket. I solve this by carrying a small screwdriver with me when using the mount but it's one more thing I need to take with me. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 9, 2010

0 3/5 Trace (Australia) - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro Handlebar Seatpost Mount (Electronics) I've been using this mount on my handlebars, but due to the shape of my bars I cannot locate this mount where it doesn't point the camera at too much of an angle off to the sides of the road. The mount really needs a left-to-right swivel point to adjust for this. Otherwise a good mount, stable and easy to secure. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 19, 2010

The reason I gave a low number is unless you own a 100% (not 99% or 98%) dust free room, you WILL end up with it in your lens and ultimately in your pictures. I recommend just spending the extra $15 to $20 and buy the camera assembly as you have to remove it to change the lens anyways! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 17, 2014

    Great Deal, Great Monitor

I had two concerns when purchasing this baby monitor. I was worried that the rather bright night light in my daughter's room would obscure the ability of the night vision monitor, and I was also worried that the price was lowered because they had found this to be an inferior product. Neither of these has been a problem. I did notice the "cheap plastic feeling" of the casing that other people mentioned in their reviews, but for one third the normal price on Amazon, I was more than willing to look past this. I'm interested to see how long it holds up. I've only had this product for a short while, but I'm moving the monitor around a lot already- we'll see how long the clip lasts. As for the night vision, it seems to be a transitional night vision, allowing anything in the light to remain bright, without obscuring the night vision's ability to clearly make out everything in its view. The ONE thing I would change would be the beep that happens every time the monitor goes... 5/5 Girl Writes Words (MI) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent digital monitor for the money

I decided on another video baby monitor as I am expecting a third child. I used to own a summer infant video monitor that I bought from babies r us but it broke down after my 3 year old decided to throw the monitor into the sink. I was not prepared to pay another 200 dollars so I shopped online for alternatives. I got this on amazon (because of the price) and this product is great. I was prepared to return it if it was crap, (which cheap products are usually online...)Pros: The VOX setting activates only when it registers loud noises (like cries) and it doesn't inadvertently turn on due to loud traffic noises (unlike my old baby monitor).price, the price is unbelievable for a monitor with video, and static-freevideo and audio quality - I can not complain. It is far better than my old monitor.interference - it works fine with our wifi and 2.4ghz cell phonepresentation - comes in nice gift box and cute designrange - I can leave the camera in the... 4/5 sd1923 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Perfect solution for problematic Canon DSLR hiss

I've been a Canon user and Canon fan for many years, but Canon video cameras always seem to have some sort of sound problem. In the case of Canon DSLRs with video capability, the problem is the loud and annoying hiss that occurs when you use an external microphone in a quiet setting. The first time I used my new Canon 60D to make a video, I quickly realized that the onboard microphone, while adequate for perfect circumstances, was not a good fit for outdoor use or pro-style interviews. I decided to buy an inexpensive $45 shotgun mic - big mistake - which produced the loudest ambient hiss I've ever heard on a recording. After a bit of research, I found that the 60D and other Canon DSLR cameras (and no doubt other brands as well) almost always produce a notable degree of "quiet room hiss" when used with most external microphones--and of course it's usually worse with a cheap mic. Further research led to further frustration, with all the "experts" suggesting that quality in-camera... 5/5 William Sidney Porter - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great for Canon DSLR videos...if you have the right settings.

Other reviewers have gone way more in depth and with much more eloquence than I ever could about this microphone. I won't even try to match it. However, I will give you the best info you will need on a Canon DSLR with manual audio control.Turn on the microphone. Plug it into the camera. Set the top switch on the microphone to the high pass filer setting. Set the bottom swtich to +20 dB. Turn the camera on. Go into the audio settings and switch them to manual. Set it to the lowest setting possible, then increase it four notches. You're welcome.Seriously, out of the box, you're going to get a notable hiss (like in all Canon DSLR footage) and you're going to think this only adds slightly to your footage audio. If you use these settings, they are the best, and recommended from Rode (though not in the manual).I actually made a video reviewing the mic and all the settings therein. In the video you can hear exactly what kind of output... 5/5 Justin T. Marx - See all my reviews, February 9, 2012

    Compact, great mic

I bought this Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun microphone to go with my Panasonic TM900 camcorder since I travel a lot shooting interviews etc. I needed something that was light and compact in keeping with the scale of the TM900. I had very bad experiences with the Sennheiser MKE300 - wow has that company gone downhill. The Sennheiser had a constant hum and static and I couldn't get enough volume out of it.I have the Rode Videomic which is good but is too big for the TM900 and I've found it unwieldy for traveling (somehow its Z shape and those rubber bands don't give me a lot of confidence). The Videomic Pro however is almost a perfect match for the TM900. It fits well into the bracket and there's no problem with fitting the plug into the camera's mic socket (which is set at an angle). I also fitted a larger ring wide angle adapter(the EXII HD7X46)and this does not interfere with the mic.The audio from the mic is great - it's quite sensitive but... 4/5 Audio Visual (San Francisco CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Rode VideoMic Pro VMP Shotgun Microphone (Camera) I bought this Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun microphone to go with my Panasonic TM900 camcorder since I travel a lot shooting interviews etc. I needed something that was light and compact in keeping with the scale of the TM900.
