Painting Gender, Constructing Theory, The Alfred Stieglitz Circle and American Formalist Aesthetics

Creator: Marcia Brennan | Art - 2002-09-09

Chapter 2 Faith, Love, and the Broken Camera Alfred Stieglitz and New York Dada It seemed like a tribute, but it wasn't. On the cover of the July- August 1915 issue of 291 was Francis Picabia's "portrait" of Alfred Stieglitz (fig. 2.1).

Publisher: MIT Press

About this book
After the closing of his first art gallery in 1917, photographer Alfred Stieglitz reemerged in the New York art world in the 1920s. He achieved his comeback in large part through the innovative means he used to promote himself and the artists of his inner circle. Stieglitz and a number of well-established critics drew on period conceptions of sexuality, gender, and cultural identity to characterize the artists he championed as the fulfillment of a shared vision of a vital, nonrepressed American art.In Painting Gender, Constructing Theory, Marcia Brennan examines how Stieglitz and the critics drew on early-twentieth-century discourses on sex and the psyche, particularly the theories of Sigmund Freud and Havelock Ellis, to characterize the artworks of the Stieglitz circle. Critics routinely described the often highly abstracted paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Demuth as transparent displays of the most intimate aspects of the self, taking both subject matter and painterly form to be guided by the artist's own gendered and psychic energies.Focusing on the key historical criticism and artworks, Brennan shows how the identities of all five Stieglitz circle artists were presented in terms of the masculinity and femininity, and the heterosexuality and homosexuality, thought to be embedded in their work. Brennan also discusses Stieglitz's relation to competing artistic and critical movements, including Thomas Hart Benton's regionalist art and Clement Greenberg's reformulation of formalism. Arguing that American formalist criticism consisted of a complex and paradoxical mixture of corporeality and disembodied transcendence, Brennan provides insight not only into the works of the Stieglitz circle but into the development of formalist criticism itself.

    touching personal story of occupation

I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Slowly and painfully, with injustice heaped upon injustice, yet they keep trying to raise their children with dignity. Very moving. My only criticism is that the subtitles are often hard to read. An easy fix. 4/5 book babe (CA ,USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: 5 Broken Cameras (DVD) I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. The crude reality for which the world is blind

A sober, serious documentary made by people who suffered in their own skin the brutality and nonsense brought by politics. The film has interesting moments, it caught my attention from the beginning to the end, it also shows the strength and courage of a people who have their rights violated everytime. I want to point out the dignity and love that family of Soraya shows with respect to my country, Brazil, the brasilian presence is clear in many passages of the film, perhaps a kind of respect much more alive than inside my own country. 5/5 Jorge Antonio Morais Silveira - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Dont listen to the poor reviews!!

So I have wanted one of these for a while now and went on and read a LOT of the reviews here on Amazon. To be honest some of the poor reviews had me a little worried! But I am leaving this review to ASSURE you that nearly ALL of the negative reviews were definitely coming from operator errors (if you get my drift) and people who didnt have ANY idea what they were buying...Clearly the Defender series is going to be a little beefy. Which I would HOPE is why your looking at this sort of case! For a big-bad iphone defending case! and that is JUST what you get! So the reviews on size I feel are unfair, based on the fact that you should have known its a sturdier case. (I find this NO problem for the protection it provides. Being a girl, I couldnt fit an iphone in my pants pocket to begin with, so its not an issue...And I would like to stress its not THAT big. Some people (a good number) have complained about a hole on the top being for the headphones being on the... 5/5 Eugenia Bone - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works great with a verizon iphone 4! UPDATED, AND NOW 4S!

Seems that some AT&T stores have stocked these on their shelves a little earlier than most stores, so I grabbed one and put it on my iphone 4 right away. (Verizon iPhone 4, not 4S)As far as form and fit goes, it's really similar to the current iphone 4 defender series, the major differences are the cut outs for the front and the back. Also to make note, these cases work on ALL models of the iPhone, whether you have a sprint, verizon, or AT&T model, they'll all work.Otterbox's old defender series didnt properly work with the white iphone 4 due to the location change of the proximity sensor. People would be dialing with their cheek, ear, face, etc because the screen wouldnt shut off. Now with the larger cut out, otterbox has fixed this issue and made the case truly work with all models of the iphone 4/4S, both white and black.Otterbox has also changed the rear camera opening to be one huge opening. This is because of some complaints of the flash... 5/5 J.F. Nice upgrade from the original iPhone 4 Defender case

I used the original Otterbox Defender case for my iPhone 4s, and while it worked ok, this version is a definite improvement. The hard plastic case and the screen protector seem to be the same as the original, other than having larger cut outs for the camera/flash and the front camera/light sensor/proximity sensor area. I never had issues using the 4s camera with the older version case, but I did with the proximity sensor and this case fixes that issue. The holster has been changed to update the release mechanism. The tab that holds the phone in the holster has been shaped differently in order to make the phone easier to clip in and release. The biggest upgrade is to the rubber jacket that fits over the plastic case. The rubber seems to be of much higher quality. It has a firmer, more substantial feel, and doesn't seem like it will lose shape over time. It gives the case a better grip in your hand and generally feels more solid overall. The opening for... 4/5 K. Myers (United States) - See all my reviews, October 31, 2011

Works but could be more rugged.

When using this to mount my GoPro camera, one of the sections broke due to a fatigue failure of the plastic. The problem is caused by the camera vibrating at the end of the bracket causing it to eventually break. I now need to replace the mount and the camera housing. Amazingly the camera still works after flying off my bike at 60 mph. One other problem is the screws that are inside the adjusting knob will sometimes not spin with the knob when trying to tighten the bracket. I solve this by carrying a small screwdriver with me when using the mount but it's one more thing I need to take with me. 3/5 Lyle Landstrom (Moorhead, Minnesota) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) needs a horizonal left-right swivel

I've been using this mount on my handlebars, but due to the shape of my bars I cannot locate this mount where it doesn't point the camera at too much of an angle off to the sides of the road. The mount really needs a left-to-right swivel point to adjust for this. Otherwise a good mount, stable and easy to secure. 3/5 Trace (Australia) - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro Handlebar Seatpost Mount for HERO Cameras (Electronics) I've been using this mount on my handlebars, but due to the shape of my bars I cannot locate this mount where it doesn't point the camera at too much of an angle off to the sides of the road. The long awaited gopro handlebar mount has arrived

The product works as expected. What you get is the clamp that will fit most handlebars and seatposts and two extensions of different lengths. The only con is that it doesn't come with rubber strips that most bicycle accesories come with to help hold the clamp in place. At first the clamp slipped on the bar no matter how tight I made it, adding a strip of rubber fixed that problem. While riding the camera seems to vibrate a lot but on reviewing the videos the images were as good as one would expect. I took videos while riding both on and off road and was pleased with the results.Audio is horrible when using this product. The vibrations cause a constant buzzing that gets very irritating during playback. But this isn't a big issue as I think most people would dub their videos with either music or commentary anyway. If you own a gopro helmet or motosport camera this is a handy and reccomended accessory. If you only own the basic wriststrap gopro you'll need... 4/5 Pwyll "John" (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Defender or Commuter? An Honest Opinion

Protecting a $200 phone is quite a formidable task and a lot of cell phone case companies do not seem to understand protection. They strive for style, design, and aesthetics. To me, this is all nonsense. Otterbox understands the principle of protection better than any other company making these types of products. Fuction is what I am looking for and and this company produces fuctioning cell phone cases. These 4S generation cases share an improved design, mainly with the camera area. I think people were complaining about shadowed pictures and video due to the tight camera cut out. They widened it to ensure the new 8MP camera with not be hindered by a design flaw.First, the defender technically provides more protection than the commuter and also comes with a handy holster with a clip. However, the defender is bulky and the port covers do not stay as well as the model for the 3GS. Also, I am not a fan of the defender because of the screen protector it comes with. Eventually,... 4/5 kylemag - See all my reviews, March 7, 2012

Best iPhone 4S case in the market!

I am very experienced with all the iPhone Otterbox case designs (the defender series, commuter series, and now the APL4 Commuter series) because I have purchased all three, the first two for my iPhone 4 and then the last for my iPhone 4S. I would definitely have to say the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case is the best fitting, most protective, and most practical case for the iPhone 4 and 4S. The defender series is just too bulky, it takes away from the sleek slim look of the iPhone. My defender series actually broke a few months after purchasing from normal wear and tear, even though that series is supposed to be the best protective. The first generation of the commuter series was a very good case. It was slimmer, while still being protective, but it didn't fit as well as I would like it to. Now to the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case. It just topped the other otter box cases by far. The case fits perfectly and looks great. Pretty good

I bought this for my iPhone 4S. I am happy with the case. The color does not look exactly like the picture, however; the case is actually a lighter blue and not as green. Still, it looks really nice and goes great with my white iPhone. I gave this case 4 stars instead of 5 because the plastic is slippery-- I was hoping it would have more grip. I feel like it could easily slip out of my hands. Additionally, it takes some effort to get the silicone to align with the plastic, and it never exactly lines up quite right, leaving gaps and slightly sharp edges where the two materials meet. This is barely noticeable though. What I like about this case is that it feels sturdy, yet it isn't so bulky that it cannot fit into my tight jeans. I obviously try to avoid dropping my phone so I haven't seen how well it protects from impacts. Still, I'm pretty confident it'll protect my phone when I inevitably drop it. Great little toy

Most of the other reviews have hit the major pros and cons with this, but there are still a few more that I can add. Hope they help in making your purchasing decisions!PRO:- Thanks to the gyro, very short learning curve. Remote has two joysticks. Left side only moves up/down and controls speed of the rotors, which controls how much lift they generate. Right joystick moves up/down (controlling forward/reverse) and left/right (makes heli spin). You can also moving the right stick diagonally to make various turns while moving forward or backwards (reverse "figure-8's" are always impressive).- Surprisingly large number of "mods" that can be done to a $30 heli. After experimenting, I have settled on two minor ones. First, I removed the spring from the left joystick in the controller. This lets me put the heli in a hover and let go of the remote ("look ma, no hands!"). I have also moved the landing gear forward in their mounts to push the center of... 4/5 RJ (NY, NY) - See all my reviews = Durability:, December 24, 2010

An unsung hero of the indoor RC helis - The Syma S107 (7.5 inches long)

RATING: After flying the 7.5 inch Syma S107 indoor heli for about 3 months now, I have to say that it is one of the most under-rated RC heli out there, hands down. Shop around. At about $30 online with taxes and stuff, this little trooper delivers the looks, detail, durability and performance of a much pricier heli. The Syma S107 has only 3-way controls but it competes surprisingly well with the likes of the Blade MCX2 which has 4-way controls and retails for about $150 off-line.PERFORMANCE: I find it more fun to fly the Syma S107 than the smoother and more mellifluous Blade MCX2. In this sense the Syma S107 hews to a less is more principle: i.e. it delivers more with less. But here is the irony of the whole situation: the Syma S107's ragged performance edge actually connects with you better than the ultra-smooth Blade MCX2. It's almost like the difference between stick shift and automatic transmission. The S107's controls just feel more tactile than those of the Blade... 5/5 C. Is there such a thing as a toy that's too perfect...?

The Syma S107 is so easy to control that on my first flight I had it tour my whole apartment, zooming in and out of closets and never touching an obstacle until I deliberately landed it. If you've never flown a good RC heli before, you might need to practice a bit. It might be your second or third flight before you get that good. The S107 is *really* that easy to control.I'm sure that many of you have played with Air Hogs and other micro helis and you long for a little heli that just plain flies where you want it to fly and stays up in the air. I'm here to tell you that such perfection is within your grasp. Before I got my S107, I already owned two Syma S105s and I never get tired of flying them. They look almost identical to the S107 and the remote is identical, but they take a little bit of skill to fly with precision and I've made little tweaks here and there to get better control. The S107 takes almost no skill to fly. Great Deal, Great Monitor

I had two concerns when purchasing this baby monitor. I was worried that the rather bright night light in my daughter's room would obscure the ability of the night vision monitor, and I was also worried that the price was lowered because they had found this to be an inferior product. Neither of these has been a problem. I did notice the "cheap plastic feeling" of the casing that other people mentioned in their reviews, but for one third the normal price on Amazon, I was more than willing to look past this. I'm interested to see how long it holds up. I've only had this product for a short while, but I'm moving the monitor around a lot already- we'll see how long the clip lasts. As for the night vision, it seems to be a transitional night vision, allowing anything in the light to remain bright, without obscuring the night vision's ability to clearly make out everything in its view. The ONE thing I would change would be the beep that happens every time the monitor goes... 5/5 E. Excellent Picture Quality, VERY Durable, Best Monitor Out There!

Customer Video Review Length:: 2:26 MinsAn overview of the great features of this monitor with great detail to the fantastic picture quality! This monitor is the greatest and it is SO DURABLE -- a must for a house with a toddler! Easy to mount, easy to use, virtually no set-up required. This monitor is a DREAM!My video shows the night vision feature and how crystal clear it is, but I wanted to add that the monitor shows FULL COLOR as well! To clarify, the monitor is automatically in FULL COLOR, and switches to night vision when it is dark. There is no toggle button or need to switch anything around -- it does it all FOR you (love this monitor!) 5/5 Lindsay Poveromo - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent digital monitor for the money

I decided on another video baby monitor as I am expecting a third child. I used to own a summer infant video monitor that I bought from babies r us but it broke down after my 3 year old decided to throw the monitor into the sink. I was not prepared to pay another 200 dollars so I shopped online for alternatives. I got this on amazon (because of the price) and this product is great. I was prepared to return it if it was crap, (which cheap products are usually online...)Pros: The VOX setting activates only when it registers loud noises (like cries) and it doesn't inadvertently turn on due to loud traffic noises (unlike my old baby monitor).price, the price is unbelievable for a monitor with video, and static-freevideo and audio quality - I can not complain. It is far better than my old monitor.interference - it works fine with our wifi and 2.4ghz cell phonepresentation - comes in nice gift box and cute designrange - I can leave the camera in the... 4/5 sd1923 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) touching personal story of occupation

4/5 book babe (CA ,USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: 5 Broken Cameras (DVD) I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. important film

a very moving and visceral film about the wonton aggression faced by Palestinians by the Israeli military. simple and beautiful, without any sentimentality.

5/5 Jorge Antonio Morais Silveira - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I can now take clear pictures again! (instructions below)

If anyone is wondering how to replace their lens, here is what I did:1) remove the 2 screws from the bottom of the phone2) the the bottom facing upwards, push down and forward on the back to slide it3) the back should come off easily -- use the suction cup or lever to lift it up if necessary4) place the back on a flat surface (i used a paper towel on the table) with the inside facing down5) use the plastic end of the screwdriver to lightly press down on the old lens6) very gradually increase pressure until it pops out (be careful because you don't want to replace the back!)7) put the new lens in place, use a lens cleaning cloth to clean the interior of the lens if you happened to touch it8) turn the iphone over and place it on the lens back (this keeps the lens from falling out)9) slide the back into place and replace the screws10) enjoy clear picturesNOTE: There didn't appear to be a lens film to remove. Definitely take off the protective film...

OK, so I installed this lens two months ago - when it arrived, I thought it had gotten scratched in transit (was facing towards the outside of the padded envelope) but it still looked better than the lens in my camera, which was giving me "vaseline" photos due to how scratched up the lens had gotten. Installation was a snap. I had the same experience as others, two screws, take the back off, swap the lenses, reinstall - 10 minutes tops. I didn't get a guitar pick though. :-(OK, two months later I am getting vaseline photos from my new lens - everything extremely fuzzy and I figure, well, for a couple of bucks I'll just swap it out again. So I come on Amazon.com and see the comments about needing to take off the protective film. I'm all like, what protective film? I rubbed the lens I installed lightly with my fingernail and, lo and behold, there sure is a piece of protective film over the lens. Now that I've taken the film off, the lens is absolutely pristine and my... 5/5 Courtney H. Bailey - See all my reviews, January 7, 2012

Super easy once you read these reviews

This kit doesn't come with directions, but it works well anyway. Here are some missing instructions (for an iPhone 4, at least) which should be useful:1) Put the iPhone flat on a table face down and unscrew the two screws at the bottom. I didn't get the sense that these screws would strip very easily, but I was careful about that anyway. The screwdriver is apparently different for the iPhone 4s, so read other reviews for how to resolve that problem, although I think the newer kits come with an iPhone 4s screwdriver also.2) Once you unscrew them, the entire back panel should pop off pretty easily. Put the screws somewhere safe: they are mind-bogglingly small.3) Look on the new lens cover to see if it has a protective covering. Some reviews say you get one, some reviews say you don't. As far as I can tell, my new lens didn't have a lens covering.4) From the outside of the back panel (the side with the Apple logo on it), carefully use the... 5/5 Ryan Nee - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Dont listen to the poor reviews!!
