Adventure Sports Photography, Creating Dramatic Images in Wild Places

Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

Publisher: Peachpit Press

The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Turn your camera phone into a helmet cam Helmet cams are usually used by the extreme-sports crowd, and they're exactly what they sound like: protective helmets with little video cameras attached. If you want footage from your ...

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

0 4/5 Matt - See all my reviews This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) Bought one of these and am pretty impressed. super light weight and has all the same mounting hardware as the gopro. Has an lcd color screen to see what your pointed at before you film and for reviewing what you've filmed. One word of caution though. DO NOT USE ANY SD CARD OTHER THAN A CLASS 4 OR 5. If you use any higher class sd card the camera will malfunction when it is hooked up to the computer when attempting to review or transfer.Emerson technical support has already told me that these cameras are a fairly new product and that there is a glich with any sd card higher than class 5. I went through 2 cameras (returned them to the store) before I contacted Emerson and they explained the problem. handles up to 32 gig BUT it has to be a class 4 or 5 only. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2012

    Nearly a GoPro

0 5/5 L.K. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) This action cam is nearly a GoPro and is 1/4 the price. It is plastic, however. Remember when you buy this that it doesn't come with a motocross helmet mount-it comes with a velcro strap mount for a bicycle helmet and a 7/8" handlebar mount. Takes a terrific video, but the sound isn't good at all. Bear in mind that customer service is positively terrible, so you'll just have to deal with the seller. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , July 2, 2013

Cheap but great waterproof dive cam! Image quality in picture mode is horrible

0 3/5 Somedude "Computer consultants Boston" (Boston MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) Doesn't say how deep this case is good for, but for playing in the water in Hawaii (surfing etc) this is great as long as you don't decide to walk on the bottom of the sea (haha)Camera and accessories feel a little bit on the cheap side but works great and quality is good for the price (a cheap alternative to gopro)Also the camera mounts ok to a motorcycle and video is a little bit jumpy because the video isn't image stabilizedAlso as mentioned in a previous review, use a class 4 Micro SD card, if you use anything less or more it will freeze (I put a class 2 card in and it froze right away when recording)Also update: the image quality in picture mode is horrible ... see my picture in the product images .. video quality is good though, just picture mode is horrible (possibly because of no image stabilization) 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , January 5, 2013

Update 9-16-2010 This is no longer their top of the line cam - the new one is based on this camera but includes a GPS and tags your images with location. You'll need their viewer to see the map movement as the video plays.Update: 7-2010Tonights episode of Dirty Jobs showed this camera strapped to a head strap for the host, Mike Rowe, who was 408 feet above the cement floor decending & window cleaning in Hawaii. Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. The quality was as good as the cable company could deliver in their 6:1 re-compression of HD. A full HD viewfinderless camera has value when you must get the shot.using a sandisk 16GB microSD card and the maximum detail [1080P] + best quality I... 4/5 HMMWV "God, Country, Corps" (santa clara, CA USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2009

    Great point of view camera

I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. I'll update the review once motorsport season comes around. With the GoPro HD and ContourHD 1080p coming out around he same time for the same price point I did a lot of research on both. I was already biased against the GoPro having owned the original Hero Cam Wide.Mounting--------The quick sliding of the GoPro is pretty simple, but the parts that you have to screw and unscrew are difficult. The screws were hard to tighten and it's too easy to lose the screw and/or nut. I also managed to break one of the mounts by dropping it - a bit too easy to break in my opinion. Getting the correct angle by stringing the screw mounts together was a challenge as well.I like the ContourHD mount a lot more. It just slides on and off and locks into place. While skiing, I was able to slide it off and... 4/5 PR (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews This review is from: ContourHD 1080p Helmet Camera (Camera) I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. Great Camera for night skating

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:44 MinsThis is a video of a couple of laps around the John Rose Oval shot at 10 PM under artificial lighting. I thought that the images were good with expected wide angle distortion.I purchased this camera to record my speed skating at the John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota. Most of my skating sessions are from 9:20 to 10:25 PM. The lighting is similar to a baseball or football field. I had some concerns about reviews that said that this camera was not that good in low light conditions but the images looked good to me.In terms of ease of use, I don't think you can really beat this camera. The instruction manual is microscopic and you are up to speed on the available controls within a very short period of time. One of the frequent criticisms of the camera is wind noise coming through in the video. It turns out that you can preset the sound level with the software that comes with the camera as a download off the MicroSD card... 5/5 George Dawson (St. Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews, December 5, 2009

Surprisingly good video quality for a sports cam in this price range

Customer Video Review Length:: 9:42 MinsPlease note that my review is for the XS100, not the XS100i which has WiFi. For some reason the seller has put my review of the XS100 under both the XS100 and the XS110i product which is confusing to people.---The Polaroid XS100 impressed me in many ways with its image quality and usability. My video review will cover most everything but I'll highlight a few things here.I also own the GoPro Hero3 Black. Although the video quality of the Polaroid isn't quite as good as the GoPro, it's pretty darn good especially when you take the price into consideration. In fact, unless you were able to directly compare the GoPro video to the Polaroid video in a direct A-B comparison, as I was able to do, you'd think the Polaroid quality was excellent... and it is very good indeed, just the colors are a bit off (I've included still photo from the Polaroid and one from my GoPro to illustrate the color issue at the end of my video review) and... 4/5 M. Takes good video and decent sound: apart from a few solvable issues this is a pretty good lower-end action camera

This is a relatively inexpensive entry into the "Action Camera" market - that takes fairly good video, and is worthwhile once you get used to it, but it is not entirely intuitive. After playing around with this for nearly a month, I think I'm pretty familiar with it, and will describe what I like and don't like about it in some detail below. I hope that all this detail is helpful. I do have experience with some of the higher-end action camcorders out there, so I'm basing my description in part on knowing what's possible. Still, this is significantly less expensive than most similar items out there, and still does a pretty good job.The video -As I'll explain below there are a few, fixable, bugs in the software, and it's not entirely intuitive in its button design. Once you get through the hurdle of figuring it out (or, if you don't care about changing settings and ignore the software entirely), you can record fairly good photos and video with it. As far as that... 4/5 N. Andersen (Florida) - See all my reviews, April 21, 2013

    Great "little" camera

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:25 MinsThis thing is great. I tried the Oregon Scientific ACT3K and the picture quality of the Muvi is far better. The Veho folks aren't doing us or themselves any favors by shipping it with such a sub-standard memory card though. At first I was slightly disappointed until I put in a 4Gb class 2 MicroSDHC card I had lying around. What an improvement. I've got a couple 8Gb class 6 cards on the way so I should be all set. Some things to note:1. Files are limited to 30 minutes at which time it will start a new file.2. For some reason all files are dated 12/31/2000 12:00 AM3. Files are huge. The 3:25 min. video I submitted was edited in Movie Maker and saved as a WMV at 2mbps and is 52Mb. The original raw 5 minute AVI file at 64kbps was 175 mb.4. The audio is awful but not really an issue for me.The edited video in WMV was as close as I could get to the original. A great gadget for discreet, high-quality video

I do a lot of walking, typically 3 to 6 miles every day from my home to my work, or to nearby businesses. Like most pedestrians, I've had my share of close calls with inattentive and careless drivers. After recently being hit by a car (fortunately, I wasn't too badly hurt), I started looking for a small videocamera that I could wear to record what happened during my walks. The Veho MUVI seemed ideal, and I've now had a couple of days to use it. So here are my impressions:(1) The MUVI is both smaller and heavier than I expected. It came with a rotating clip to hook to the front of my shirt, and a lanyard to wear around my neck. It looks and feels quite sturdy. I wouldn't want to bounce it off a sidewalk, but it definitely feels tough enough to endure normal handling, or being dropped a short distance. It does get warm to the touch while recording.(2) Despite what the product photos on Amazon show, the camera must be mounted or carried vertically, not... 5/5 W. Basic Bit of Kit... but with issues.

First up, I'm not a big fan of the GoPro mounting system as it's way too limited in its ability to rotate freely like a ball mount. It's OK for direct mounting where ever that's possible (like on the front or top of a helmet) but mount it to the side of that same helmet and the only way to twist and turn the camera to where you want it (unless it's looking straight in the direction of the mount) is to add more adapters into the equation. More adapters means more length, and more length = more vibration. So that brings me to this mount. Even in its standard configuration you have quite a lever between the camera and the base mount and this makes for significant vibration when the there's play between the base mount (stuck to your helmet) and the clip-in section of the helmet mount.GoPro have come up with a solution to the excess play between these two parts (the 'male' and the 'female' so to speak) and this comes in the form of a white silicone plug, or spacer... 3/5 S. Decent Kid's Action Camera

The Action Shot camera is decent kid's starter camcorder for capturing fun moments in motion with minimum of effort to get started. The video quality captured in VGA mode is decent but in QVGA the video quality is very good and clear however pictures captured in Photo Mode are grainy and most of the time unclear. This camcorder does not work well in low light situations for video or pictures. There aren't many buttons on the Action Shot camera keeping it simple to use with just two buttons. Once you get the hang of the buttons it's easy to use. The only thing that I feel this camcorder is lacking is a viewer because it's feels limiting not being able to see what the camera is recording or has recorded. Grant it the Action Shot camera would most of the times be mounted to a helmet, bike or some other devices following the action so the need to see what it being recorded isn't need then but it would be nice if while holding it a person could see what is being... 5/5 Donna (US) - See all my reviews = Durability:, April 14, 2013

    great little sport camera

People may be comparing this to a $400 GOpro, well it's not a GOpro. My wife got sick of me strapping our digital camera to things, (mostly my RC planes), to take videos, so she got this for a birthday present. I'm very glad she did. It weighs less and takes better videos than our way more expensive camera, and at this price I'm not too nervous about using it for what I do. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , December 8, 2013

    Great Cam! With issues....

Let me start by saying that this cam makes great, clear video. It lasts beyond the rated 2hrs. using rechargeable batts. An 8gb card gives about 1:50 of record time, @ 2gb per 30 mins. A 16gb card would let you max out the batt. life. I gave it 4 stars for a few small(sort of) issues. The mounting systems have limited adjustment, and very limited instructions. The H.bar mount sits very high, and has no provision for screw tightening, you pull it tight like a tie-wrap. The helmet and goggle strap mounts require bending a plastic tab, and pulling the base completely out of the mount to adjust the vert. angle, something near impossible to do if you're already wearing it. You need eyes on to do it right, and not break it. The stick-on helmet mount has no side to side adjustment, so you better get it pointed right on the first try. It also has very limited tilt range, so it almost has to be where the goggle strap goes anyway. There's no provision for top mounting, only side... 4/5 A. For the $, best helmet cam

0 5/5 ander498 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Midland XTC100VP2 640 x 480 Standard Definition Extreme Action Camera with 4 types of Mounts Included (Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Electronics) This is very cheap compared to every other action camera out there. And what do you give up? Not a whole lot.Cons:It is not totally waterproof, but after a lot of ski days, it has no issuesThe files it creates are huge - about 70mb/minPros:Comes with lots of mounts, the goggle mount works greatImage quality is very very good. People hear "HD" and think that is what matters. Really, the lens, image processor, white balance, contrast etc etc matter more, and they are really good on this little guy.Small and light. I have used the GoPro HD and its like skiing with a weight on one side of your head.$77!! Its so much cheaper than your other options - which also charge for mounts. This is a great little camera. Originally bought for my little bro for skiing, we have been both using it, and I will be getting another one for me shortly. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , February 5, 2011

meh, should have spent more on a better camera

I use this with my dual sport motorcycle. First the helmet strap isn't long enough to go around a helmet so I had to use the sticker mount. That worked fine. Next, the unit I got was an open box return and the usb port was messed up. They sent me a new one. No problem. Then I got to actually take it out and use it and here is what I found out.Going faster than 10mph it picks up the wind noise so bad you have to mute the sound. Also picks up a horrible high pitch whistle. The video looks passable when you watch it at its native size but if you expand it to full screen on your computer or TV you can't pick out any details. Everything is very pixelated. Which since it is I think 640X480 that is what you can expect.Colors are washed out too. I kept saying to myself " I can't wait to get home and show the kids my video of how beautiful it is here" and then I get home and it is just crappy video quality. I am going to save up for a go-pro. You get what... 2/5 M. Fields - See all my reviews, June 4, 2011
