The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Turn your camera phone into a helmet cam Helmet cams are usually used by the extreme-sports crowd, and they're exactly what they sound like: protective helmets with little video cameras attached. If you want footage from your ...

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

Dirty Jobs uses this where big cams dont go /great 2nd angle cam

Update 9-16-2010 This is no longer their top of the line cam - the new one is based on this camera but includes a GPS and tags your images with location. You'll need their viewer to see the map movement as the video plays.Update: 7-2010Tonights episode of Dirty Jobs showed this camera strapped to a head strap for the host, Mike Rowe, who was 408 feet above the cement floor decending & window cleaning in Hawaii. Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. The quality was as good as the cable company could deliver in their 6:1 re-compression of HD. A full HD viewfinderless camera has value when you must get the shot.using a sandisk 16GB microSD card and the maximum detail [1080P] + best quality I... 4/5 HMMWV "God, Country, Corps" (santa clara, CA USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2009

    Great point of view camera

I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. I'll update the review once motorsport season comes around. With the GoPro HD and ContourHD 1080p coming out around he same time for the same price point I did a lot of research on both. I was already biased against the GoPro having owned the original Hero Cam Wide.Mounting--------The quick sliding of the GoPro is pretty simple, but the parts that you have to screw and unscrew are difficult. The screws were hard to tighten and it's too easy to lose the screw and/or nut. I also managed to break one of the mounts by dropping it - a bit too easy to break in my opinion. Getting the correct angle by stringing the screw mounts together was a challenge as well.I like the ContourHD mount a lot more. It just slides on and off and locks into place. While skiing, I was able to slide it off and... 4/5 PR (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews This review is from: ContourHD 1080p Helmet Camera (Camera) I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. Great Camera for night skating

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:44 MinsThis is a video of a couple of laps around the John Rose Oval shot at 10 PM under artificial lighting. I thought that the images were good with expected wide angle distortion.I purchased this camera to record my speed skating at the John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota. Most of my skating sessions are from 9:20 to 10:25 PM. The lighting is similar to a baseball or football field. I had some concerns about reviews that said that this camera was not that good in low light conditions but the images looked good to me.In terms of ease of use, I don't think you can really beat this camera. The instruction manual is microscopic and you are up to speed on the available controls within a very short period of time. One of the frequent criticisms of the camera is wind noise coming through in the video. It turns out that you can preset the sound level with the software that comes with the camera as a download off the MicroSD card... 5/5 George Dawson (St. Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews, December 5, 2009

    Great Cam! With issues....

Let me start by saying that this cam makes great, clear video. It lasts beyond the rated 2hrs. using rechargeable batts. An 8gb card gives about 1:50 of record time, @ 2gb per 30 mins. A 16gb card would let you max out the batt. life. I gave it 4 stars for a few small(sort of) issues. The mounting systems have limited adjustment, and very limited instructions. The H.bar mount sits very high, and has no provision for screw tightening, you pull it tight like a tie-wrap. The helmet and goggle strap mounts require bending a plastic tab, and pulling the base completely out of the mount to adjust the vert. angle, something near impossible to do if you're already wearing it. You need eyes on to do it right, and not break it. The stick-on helmet mount has no side to side adjustment, so you better get it pointed right on the first try. It also has very limited tilt range, so it almost has to be where the goggle strap goes anyway. There's no provision for top mounting, only side... 4/5 A. For the $, best helmet cam

This is very cheap compared to every other action camera out there. And what do you give up? Not a whole lot.Cons:It is not totally waterproof, but after a lot of ski days, it has no issuesThe files it creates are huge - about 70mb/minPros:Comes with lots of mounts, the goggle mount works greatImage quality is very very good. People hear "HD" and think that is what matters. Really, the lens, image processor, white balance, contrast etc etc matter more, and they are really good on this little guy.Small and light. I have used the GoPro HD and its like skiing with a weight on one side of your head.$77!! Its so much cheaper than your other options - which also charge for mounts. This is a great little camera. Originally bought for my little bro for skiing, we have been both using it, and I will be getting another one for me shortly. 5/5 ander498 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) meh, should have spent more on a better camera

I use this with my dual sport motorcycle. First the helmet strap isn't long enough to go around a helmet so I had to use the sticker mount. That worked fine. Next, the unit I got was an open box return and the usb port was messed up. They sent me a new one. No problem. Then I got to actually take it out and use it and here is what I found out.Going faster than 10mph it picks up the wind noise so bad you have to mute the sound. Also picks up a horrible high pitch whistle. The video looks passable when you watch it at its native size but if you expand it to full screen on your computer or TV you can't pick out any details. Everything is very pixelated. Which since it is I think 640X480 that is what you can expect.Colors are washed out too. I kept saying to myself " I can't wait to get home and show the kids my video of how beautiful it is here" and then I get home and it is just crappy video quality. I am going to save up for a go-pro. You get what... 2/5 M. Fields - See all my reviews, June 4, 2011

    BEST FOR MILITARY/TACTICAL USE

I want to first start by saying I have them all, the GoPro the Contour HD and the Contour Roam. I am stationed in remote Afghanistan and go out on foot patrols frequently. The other cameras require FAR too much prep time to be tactically practical. This one is amazing because it is one switch and done (ON)!! I keep it mounted with the adhesive mount to my Kevlar and it is always ready to go. The others require you to turn them on and have them on standby this is not preactical when the action starts. The image quality is as good as you want, except at night, but that is just a sacrifice you have to make on all cameras of this type. If you are a soldier you want THIS CAMERA!! Dont waste your money on the GoPro, it doesn't fit a soldier's style. Combine the images with iMovie and you can churn out very nice AAR's for your soldiers to learn from. 5/5 Rob M.D. (Texas) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great HD camcorder for the range

Well, I've taken the Contour Roam out to a few range trips now and I can give a much better review at this point.Build Quality: 10/10As soon as you pick up the Contour Roam, you will definitely notice the build quality of the device. It feels very solid with an aluminum tube body. The lower half where the mounting options would go is made of plastic but is securely attached to the main body. The camera angel can be adjusted by turning the front end of the device; it turns with a fluid motion and distinct notch at the -90, 0, 90, and 180 positions.Clarity: 9/10I was really impressed with the clarity of the lens - particularly at longer distances of about 15-20 yards. If your expectations for a device like this are reasonable, you'll be happy with the image quality. In the video that I made, I used a Canon S100 and the Contour Roam. You can definitely tell a difference in the image quality if you compare the two. That being said, the Contour... 5/5 J. Dang - See all my reviews, December 13, 2011

    Don't believe the marketing hype...

I've only used the camera a couple of times so far... the first of which was during a consistent light rain while mountain biking out on the trails here in the Pacific Northwest. In the product description you'll find a whole paragraph describing how this unit is "super tough" and how the "ContourROAM is made to withstand encounters with everything from eating mud puddles", etc. After one outing in not super tough conditions I wound up with the front glass (or plastic, not sure what it's made of) having scratches in it from me wiping it clear while riding down the trail so that I could film. This is not a huge deal for me as most surfaces will scratch when rubbed with wet dirt, fine, I get that. So, I contacted Contour describing what happened and asked if I could order some replacement glass for the front or if the existing lens refresh kits would work. Here's the reply from Contour:There are currently no replacement lenses available. Great "little" camera

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:25 MinsThis thing is great. I tried the Oregon Scientific ACT3K and the picture quality of the Muvi is far better. The Veho folks aren't doing us or themselves any favors by shipping it with such a sub-standard memory card though. At first I was slightly disappointed until I put in a 4Gb class 2 MicroSDHC card I had lying around. What an improvement. I've got a couple 8Gb class 6 cards on the way so I should be all set. Some things to note:1. Files are limited to 30 minutes at which time it will start a new file.2. For some reason all files are dated 12/31/2000 12:00 AM3. Files are huge. The 3:25 min. video I submitted was edited in Movie Maker and saved as a WMV at 2mbps and is 52Mb. The original raw 5 minute AVI file at 64kbps was 175 mb.4. The audio is awful but not really an issue for me.The edited video in WMV was as close as I could get to the original. Airborne uses.....

Purchased one of these and promptly rigged it up on the tiedown mount of an RV8 aircraft and flew it thru barrel rolls and high speed (200mph+) passes at airport. Camera did a very good job, only a slight pause for some unexplainable, reason (very slight). Handled the lighting variables in good shape. Excellent for the cost, and this is coming from a retired USAF Motion Picture Cameraman who has done several kinds of these applications on higher speed aircraft. 5/5 Sam Sullivan (Gulfport, MS United States) - See all my reviews, January 15, 2010

You won't find one this tiny for this price with this quality

I've bought 3 or 4 cameras of this type for use at work. I've bought 2 different helmet cameras that worked kind of okay, but this one knocks it out of the park. The case is built like a tank, it's very easy to use. The voice activated function is great. I'm using an 8gb chip in mine, so I can't talk about the quality problems I've heard about when using the 2gig chip that ships. I've used it the past couple days testing it by using the clip mount to clip it under my rear view mirror facing forward and I can tell you there are no police dashboard cameras that can beat the video. The camera focuses perfectly through the windshield and the angle of view is wide enough to capture a perfect scene. Low light is great, used it at a shooting range yesterday and once I figured out the proper placement the videos were great even in reduced lighting. Midland Video Cam

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use. Has just an OFF/ON switch, and not much else. Charges via USB cable or 110V adapter. Movies can be easily viewed or edited on laptop or desktop computer.Cons: Cheap construction. Microphone cannot be turned off. Only suggested solution is to stick a piece of tape over the hole. Manual is very succinct and lacks detail. No viewfinder, and aiming is by trial and error, mostly the latter. Has single focus wide angle lens, which gives a fish-eye view of the world. Accessories provided are of limited utility and a puzzle to use. Camera is not waterproof. In summary: You get what you pay for. OK for a beginner, but if you plan to do serious filming you'd better invest a little more in a quality product. 3/5 Doctor Moto "DRM" (FL United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Shoddy manufacturing?

When I first opened the package I was pretty excited. There were plenty of mount options and a few cables for charging as advertised. I took the camera out of the weatherproof case and it turned on and had a working touchscreen.I then turned the unit off and put it back in the case (which I don't think is strictly waterproof - it looked like there was a crack water can get into). I tried to turn the unit back on again via the buttons that are on the case, and it didn't work. Instead of the screen coming on after 3 seconds like the first time, the "busy" light turned on and then nothing else happened. After that, nothing I did would get the busy light to turn off or the screen to turn on.I am returning this product and I don't recommend other people buy it. 1/5 Jen V (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) OMG how bad is this????

The quality is absolute crap.Is not 1080p so is falsely advertised. Will not use any 32gb memory cards that I've tried. The camera rattles around in the housing so can't get a clear image.I put the unit on my bike, it lasted one bump and fell apart as the mount split in two. Can't think of anything else... 1/5 donny - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I really want to love this camera. **Updated

This is close to being a perfect example of a wearable/mountable POV camera. But unfortunately, close isn't quite good enough. The pros:Video is awesome, in all of the modes.Stills are very good quality, the timelapse feature is fantastic. It's waterproof. The mounting options are (almost) limitless. The cons:It's awkward to set up. Menu is like something from 20 years ago.Firmware issues have yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. This is inexcusable as the camera has been available for sale for nearly a year.Audio is useless. They could have saved weight and cost by just not including a mic. The only instance where it even sort of works is when mounted right near a loudish sound you want to highlight, such as an engine. There are too many instances where "Macgyvering" is required to get the desired result. The quick release mount rattles so you need to tape the base plate, the non waterproof back allows too much... 3/5 MD Boatbum (Annapolis, MD) - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro HD Motorsports Hero (Camera) This is close to being a perfect example of a wearable/mountable POV camera. Great HD Camera for Adventure Minded People

I have used this camera a couple of times since receiving it for Christmas. I have used both the strap mount for my vented bicycle helmet as well as the permanent stick on mount for my dual sport motorcycle helmet. In both cases, the mounts work as well as the camera. I still have the previous generation GoPro HERO in standard definition, but not in the wide field of view lens configuration like the current HD version. I like the wide field of view of this HD model. It is great at giving a very good view of both the trail as will as your handlebar movements while riding both my mountain bike or motorcycle. The quality of the video is fantastic. The files do get large, but that is to be expected with the high resolution of this camera. I have been using a 16GB SDHC card and have filed up about half of it on one battery charge. I would recommend a high speed card reader to improve the download times from the card. A 12 min video was nearly a gigabyte. Great, but not underwater!

the good...Great package. Plenty of accessories for customized mounting. nice small and simple design. strong housing, yet clasp can be broken easily if not properly aligned and forced to close. Amazing picture quality. setup menu a little dated.the bad...Was bought for its waterproof qualities in preparation for a Fiji trip. HOWEVER, contrary to what GoPro touts, it is not great for underwater. The reason is the housing curvature over the lense curvature combined with water defraction creates blurry images. this is only found in the GoPro FAQs. very misleading. do an internet search on this. had to buy a special housing with flat lense from eyeofmine.com at $80. Now picture quality underwater is the same as above water. this is where my two stars came from.If you want it for underwater and don't mind buying a new housing for $80, then I recommend, if not, don't buy.If you are using this not for its waterproof qualities, then I recommend. 2/5 kk72 - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro HD Helmet Hero (Camera) the good...Great package. Pros :1. Great small size2. Bluetooth integration with smart phone is an A+ idea. a. You can control settings. b. You can see/ensure it's pointing in the direction you want. c. You can review video, (although it looks choppy via bluetooth) d. Haven't tested it yet, cuz I probably will never use it, but you can have it instantly upload videos.3. Night mode is pretty decent, although movements can get more blurred. Fast camera panning in this mode will show blurry video, but mounted it to my helmet, took a ride on my motorcycle, and the video was pretty good! It was way brighter than the youtube video from 808yewtube (search for her) using the HD170 Stealth. Maybe not as smooth/sharp, but definitely brighter. Though you lose detail next to bright light sources.Cons :1. Video quality is so so, but of course, that's in the specs anyways (480p), and the lens is small. I never knew what 480p meant...all it means is... 3/5 vickun "vickun" (Hawaii) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent Device for its Purpose

The Looxcie is everything I expected it to be - a reasonably decent quality, unobtrusive wearable camera. The bluetooth sync with my Nexus One is sometimes temperamental, but I can usually get it to work by either power cycling the Looxcie or turning off and on the Bluetooth on my phone. The small red light can be easily blocked by a small black sticker.I wasn't aware that the earpiece made a beep every 30 seconds (audible to me, not to others) when recording. That is helpful for timing use of the moments button, but a bit annoying when using for long periods of time.I have used the Looxcie while doing street photography, particularly when getting photos of police and protesters. I take high quality imagery with my real camera, but have the Looxcie running to capture any impromptu encounters with those who don't wish to have their actions recorded. They focus on my Nikon, and not my bluetooth headset. 5/5 Mark Lyon (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, November 18, 2011

    Contour

    Great POV and Action Camera

This is my first Contour camera, and I was lucky that just at the time I decided to get one, the new ROAM 2 came out. The reason I like the ROAM2 over the original ROAM (which can now be had much cheaper) is for the 60 fps filming in 720p. This will produce smoother video, especially if you like to use slow motion effects now and then. The ROAM 2 comes in attractive packaging and includes: 1 profile mount; 1 rotating flat surface mount; lanyard tether; USB cable; lens cap; 4GB MicroSD card; storage pouch and lens cloth.Initial tests of the ROAM 2 in 720p @ 60fps and full HD 1080p @ 30fps are very impressive. At 720p you will have a view angle of 170 degrees, which gives you a wide panorama but some fisheye effect (to be expected at that width). In 1080p the view angle is reduced to 125 degrees, which still gives a nice wide view, but much less fisheye. The quality of the video image is very good. In full 1080p it is ultra-sharp and the colors are very good. The... 5/5 Justin Opinion (USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2012

A nice improvement over the original CotourRoam

I had purchased the original ContourRoam camera about a week before they announced this one. Luckily I had saved my packaging so I returned it and bought the ContourRoam2. There are some small but very worthwhile changes to this camera that make it a better choice. First, of course, is the 60 fps video option. I haven't had a chance to test that yet but it's a nice addition and the main reason I went with the 2. Next, there is a locking button on the recording slider. This is useful to avoid either accidental starts or stops, as it locks in both positions. The printed numbers on the lens barrel are clearer, brighter, and far easier to see. The card formatting is now done by pushing and holding a small button. In the previous model you had to use the supplied tool or a paper clip and stick it into a hole to format the card. The new ContourRoam 2 also came with a nifty little cloth bag that has an attached lens cloth and a small pocket to hold the included memory micro SD card and micro... 5/5 Sky King (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great underwater camcorder

I feel like I spend half my life in the water lately. I scubadive and snorkle at least once a week. I needed an underwater camcorder because I usually see things in the ocean that amaze me here in Florida. I had resisted taking any type of camera equipment with me up until now, since I like to be unfettered with any extra equipment when I'm in the water, but finally gave in.This waterproof camcorder takes beautiful video. Since it is only rated for a depth of one meter, I am only using it for snorkeling. The video it shoots is crystal clear without any type of motion blurring, and I don't see any strange color effects. There is no moire, and all video is well lit and bright. It's easy to use, just push a button and it's on. Some type of strap to hold onto would have been useful on this. But otherwise, I can't find anything to complain about. This is small and lightweight. It's sturdy and appears to be well made. Battery life is good. I recommend this. 5/5 Bernadette (Key West, Florida USA) - See all my reviews, October 21, 2012

Locking Instant On-Record Switch No power button, no problem. Simply slide the Instant On-Record switch into its locking position to ensure you shoot exactly when you're ready.
Vibrant color options We understand that style matters and color can make or break a look. Match your kit, or bring in a little contrast by adding a ContourROAM2 in one of four colors: Contour green, red, blue or traditional black.
Waterproof without a case Good things come in small packages. The ContourROAM2 sheds bulk by working underwater without an extra case.
60fps As requested by our users, we've bumped up the frames per second to 60, meaning you can now get that smooth video quality you've come to expect from Contour cameras.

Good Camera - Simple Sound Quality Fix

I am a police officer and I use this camera when interviewing people. I was initially disappointed with the sound quality, but found the video and capacity with the 2gig card excellent. The problem with the sound is the waterproofing. If you are not going to be using it in water or wet environments all you have to do is remove the mic cover and there is a black square rubber cover over the mic. It is 1mm or thicker and causes the sound distortion and lack of range. Remove it an re-install the cover and you get as good a sound as any other video camera. This camera is well made and a good value at the price. If it had an external mic jack it would rate five stars. 4/5 Shawn K. Tolley - See all my reviews, August 28, 2007

Good idea, good video, poor quality

I bought this after being involved in an auto accident and suffering an insurance rate increase because I couldn't prove what happened. Less than three months later I was hit by another driver who ran a red light. She and her passenger claimed she had a green light. I had this mounted on the dashboard and recording as I was hit and was able to prove she was lying. Without it I would have been blamed for the accident. It paid for itself already. The camera provides reasonable quality video but very poor audio. It does not operate well in low light conditions (say 30 minutes after sunset). It's very easy to use and has the ability to change resolution, frame rate, date and time, and also to delete files using the built in display and buttons. At 640x480 30fps a 2Gb card (4Gb not supported) can hold about one hour of video. At 15fps it can record about 90 minutes. It only records videos up to 45 minutes, then seamlessly starts another file. It eats batteries so I bought two... 5/5 Terry Hutt (Running Springs, CA) - See all my reviews, January 23, 2008
