Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

    Great POV and Action Camera

This is my first Contour camera, and I was lucky that just at the time I decided to get one, the new ROAM 2 came out. The reason I like the ROAM2 over the original ROAM (which can now be had much cheaper) is for the 60 fps filming in 720p. This will produce smoother video, especially if you like to use slow motion effects now and then. The ROAM 2 comes in attractive packaging and includes: 1 profile mount; 1 rotating flat surface mount; lanyard tether; USB cable; lens cap; 4GB MicroSD card; storage pouch and lens cloth.Initial tests of the ROAM 2 in 720p @ 60fps and full HD 1080p @ 30fps are very impressive. At 720p you will have a view angle of 170 degrees, which gives you a wide panorama but some fisheye effect (to be expected at that width). In 1080p the view angle is reduced to 125 degrees, which still gives a nice wide view, but much less fisheye. The quality of the video image is very good. In full 1080p it is ultra-sharp and the colors are very good. The... 5/5 Justin Opinion (USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2012

After returning my Hero3 black for various reasons, I decided to save a few bucks and try out the Contour ROAM2 instead. While not directly competitive of the hero3 Black, I felt that the price point and form factor would be better suited to my primary need as a motorcycle helmet cam. Prior to purchase, I honestly spent more time reading reviews of the Contour+2 than I did the ROAM2, but opted for the cheaper ROAM2 instead. That decision came back to bite me. Roam2 vs +2 review

This is a dual review, as I own both the Contour + 2 and the Contour Roam2. I don't work for nor do I have any affiliation with Contour. I've had the Roam2 for more than 6 months, but held off writing this review until I had the +2 to compare it to. Although I don't own a GoPro, several friends do and I do their video editing so I'll chime in on the Contour vs. GoPro at the end.MOUNTS:Contour uses the same proprietary mounts across their lineup, so interchangeability between the two should be fairly easy (but doesn't always work out that way). I've found some to be flimsy(hat mount), while others are damn near bomb proof(suction cup)! The rotating lens means you can mount it in just about any position, however it is difficult to know that you've framed the shot with the correct orientation! Had an important video recorded upside down - laser level only lets you know it's level, not if it's upside down! 60fps As requested by our users, we've bumped up the frames per second to 60, meaning you can now get that smooth video quality you've come to expect from Contour cameras.
Locking Instant On-Record Switch No power button, no problem. Simply slide the Instant On-Record switch into its locking position to ensure you shoot exactly when you're ready.
Waterproof without a case Good things come in small packages. The ContourROAM2 sheds bulk by working underwater without an extra case.
Vibrant color options We understand that style matters and color can make or break a look. Match your kit, or bring in a little contrast by adding a ContourROAM2 in one of four colors: Contour green, red, blue or traditional black.

    Better than the competition

The video this little camera produces is beyond comparison, true 1080p HD 16:9 video. For the price you get a very good product. Additional, separately purchased mounting accessories allow the user many options. It is true that you don't get a user manual, but that takes less then a minute to download from the Midland website. I use this camera to record my daily commute to work and I get plenty of good video of bad drivers. The main reason for recording your commutes (even to the grocery store) is protection. If an accident occurs, there is no doubt what happened, you have it recorded. Being able to have the Police view the video on there patrol computer at the accident scene greatly helps when determining who was at fault (just make sure it wasn't you). Doesn't get 5-stars because the USB cable is way to short and does not come with a vehicle charging adapter. Although a vehicle charger adapter is available from Midland, you will need to find a longer USB cable from another... 4/5 S. Morrison "Steven M." (East Coast) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2014

    A surprisingly great little camera

I was looking for a helmet cam but didn't want to pay three hundred dollars, so I gave this one a try. It doesn't seem to have a way to set the time and date, but I do that with the video when it is on my computer. I mounted it on a half helmet with the mounting stick on pad they include and it sets well adjusts well and holds it's position. I wore it on a helmet in my truck to the airport this January to pick someone up from the Pittsburgh airport. There was a blizzard going on and I drove from late afternoon daylight to darkness on the way back. It adjusted for light and dark, car headlights, street lights, and natural daylight in a great way. The picture was clear no graininess in a downpour of snow by my truck headlights. The resulting film looked just like the actual scenes and lighting was in reality. For the price this is one great little camera. This review is from: Midland XTC285VP 1080p HD Wearable Action Camera Breakout Case with Image Stabilization and Universal Mount Video Camera (Electronics) This is an awesome little camera. I bought it to take on my first bear hunt. I had it in my pocket the entire trip up and back. Capturing clips along the way. Easy to use. Lots of mounting options. I put a sticky mount to my bow and used the hat clip. One BIG advantage of this cam over the Go Pro (that my buddy purchased) is that the indicator lights are on top of the camera and out of site from the game seeing them. His Go Pro had lights on the front face which the bears didn't like. He finally taped over them. I also like the LxWxD dimensions a lot better then the Go Pro. The other advantage over the Go Pro is this camera has a standard camera thread mount on it. The Go Pro does not. This allowed me to use it on the same mounts as my normal video camera. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , June 12, 2014

A nice, average sunglasses recorder (See end for Review/Demo Video)

I bought this off Amazon because I wanted to try something cheap and neat that could record point of view videos of roller coaster rides. As expected, it has its pros and cons. It is important to note that the lenses aren't real UV lenses. They don't hide your eyes and they don't have protection like actual sunglasses lenses. The sides of the frame are bulky so if you plan on hiding them in plain sight, you need long hair. Otherwise, it looks fine. Now, this is important:The glasses do not work without a Micro SD card. I followed the instructions included with the item and tried picturing/recording without an SD card. It did not function properly and I considered returning it. Luckily, I had an extra Micro SD card to test and after inserting it, the camera took pictures and recorded videos as it was designed to. Takes good video and decent sound: apart from a few solvable issues this is a pretty good lower-end action camera

This is a relatively inexpensive entry into the "Action Camera" market - that takes fairly good video, and is worthwhile once you get used to it, but it is not entirely intuitive. After playing around with this for nearly a month, I think I'm pretty familiar with it, and will describe what I like and don't like about it in some detail below. I hope that all this detail is helpful. I do have experience with some of the higher-end action camcorders out there, so I'm basing my description in part on knowing what's possible. Still, this is significantly less expensive than most similar items out there, and still does a pretty good job.The video -As I'll explain below there are a few, fixable, bugs in the software, and it's not entirely intuitive in its button design. Once you get through the hurdle of figuring it out (or, if you don't care about changing settings and ignore the software entirely), you can record fairly good photos and video with it. First off I would like to say don't worry too much about all the bad reviews on here about this camera. I researched all over amazon for other helmet cams and still went with this one. I am very glad I did. When I opened the package I was surprised by how much nicer it was than expected. It comes with an 8gb Memory card. The picture and video quality is amazing too!! The directions suck, But if you have used other electronics before it is very easy to figure out. I bought it to mount onto the handlebars of my 400ex racing four-wheeler and my helmet. The sticky tabs to mount onto the helmet are actually very rugged. However, I did mount it onto my handlebars and took it for a rugged run on a motocross track. The little brass screw at the bottom of the camera holder used to screw the camera on the mount fell out and my camera fell off my bike. So I glued the screw in with a heavy duty all purpose glue and I haven't had any problems since. The failure of the mount did not make me... 4/5 Derrick - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) First off I would like to say don't worry too much about all the bad reviews on here about this camera. Love it easy to use, good video footage. Bad mounts though I switched to my LED Torch light holder these are way stronger.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bicycle-Bike-Cycling-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Mount-Clamp-Clip-Holder-Grip-Bracket-/321296650787?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4acec5d223.Sound quality its ok as the mic is behind the water proof cap (Maybe water resistant). If you leave the cap off, put a wind sock on over the end if you want it to get no wind noise. Memory slot is not a spring load so don't try to push the memory card in to release. You'll a pair of tweeters to remove the memory card. 720p Looks better than 1080p and smaller file.Heres a reviewhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEBG33mYVyw 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , August 10, 2014

I was planning on replacing it with the GoPro Black edition until I read the bad Amazon reviews

This review is from: DBPOWER SJ4000 1080P Waterproof Action Camera DV 12MP HD DVR Camcorder + Mounting Accessories Kit (Camera) I recently lost a GoPro along with my DJI Phantom drone, which flew away. I was planning on replacing it with the GoPro Black edition until I read the bad Amazon reviews. I noticed this while browsing and thought it was one helluva deal so I bought one. This camera is cool! It comes with a boatload of accessories and, as a bonus, the accessories I bought for my lost GoPro fit this camera, including the windshield mount suction cup.Picture quality is excellent as are the videos. I bought a yellow one, which came directly from China so it took a little longer to receive. I definitely recommend this, especially for the price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , October 29, 2014

"The Way" - "El Camino de Santiago" 306km recorded with the SJ4000 Outdoor Sports DVR Cam Action DV Camera.

I purchased this camera to record my bicycle pilgrimage in Spain from Leon to Santiago de Compostela. (https://www.youtube.com/user/ElCamino200kBiking).The positive:- This tiny camera is rugged and tough. It resisted 3 hard falls (without the protective case!) on hard loose rocks...The lens got a minor scratch, but it didn't show in the image.- The battery held for 10 hours... on/off recording...The not so good:- The case/handle holder did not fit in the bicycle handle... it was too small. I used the camera with the clip and clipped it to the brake cable or my backpack shoulder strap.- the exposure/contrast is not that good. For open view it works okay, but if I get in the frame, the exposure would be dark. If you are shooting inside with sun coming from the windows, the shot will not work. The contrast from the sun coming from the window is too bright.- the audio: Don't expect audio recording with the case.. even with the one that has the... 3/5 Ileana (VA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Tachyon Ops HD GunCam Review

First impressions: The first thing I thought as I opened the box and held it in my hand was how small it is, the second was how well made it is. My intent for the camera was to use it as a gun cam -- mounted on my hunting rifle. I've used 3 other cameras for this purpose in the last year, and of the 4 cameras, the Tachyon camera is by far the smallest (roughly 1/3 the size of the second smallest), and most well built. Of the previous 3 cameras, one felt like it was made in the Soviet era 80s, the other just felt flat out cheap, and the 3rd was pretty decent, but not as well made as this.Further observations: It struck me that the major difference between the 4 cameras, the other 3 cameras were made around the parts -- i.e. the developers had the parts, and kind of made the camera around those parts. The Tachyon camera feels like it was specifically engineered for a task, and those parts were designed to fit inside the parameters of that task. For example, the... 5/5 Tatman - See all my reviews This review is from: Tachyon OPS HD Helmet Camera (Electronics) First impressions: The first thing I thought as I opened the box and held it in my hand was how small it is, the second was how well made it is. You get what you pay for

This is a low cost, simple to operate, digital camcorder that's claimed to be "high-def". It may record 1280x720 video, but the quality is not very high; the geometric resolution is probably like DVD level, and the image fidelity (brightness, contrast, noise, color resolution) is a little better than cell phone quality. I don't have the equipment to make quantitative measurements, so these are just eyeball comparisons against other camcorders I have.I used this a couple times to record various settings and a couple of my bike commutes. I combined two of its included mounting hardware to make one that worked better on my helmet. The first thing I noticed was that panning the camera, even at very slow speeds, causes the images to flicker, and sometimes tear. It's as if the image processor does not have enough power to deal with this many pixels at 30 fps. So for example, the effective resolution was so poor that I had a really hard time reading license plates... 3/5 Mountain Dewd (Pasadena, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Tachyon OPS HD Helmet Camera (Electronics) This is a low cost, simple to operate, digital camcorder that's claimed to be "high-def". Great "little" camera

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:25 MinsThis thing is great. I tried the Oregon Scientific ACT3K and the picture quality of the Muvi is far better. The Veho folks aren't doing us or themselves any favors by shipping it with such a sub-standard memory card though. At first I was slightly disappointed until I put in a 4Gb class 2 MicroSDHC card I had lying around. What an improvement. I've got a couple 8Gb class 6 cards on the way so I should be all set. Some things to note:1. Files are limited to 30 minutes at which time it will start a new file.2. For some reason all files are dated 12/31/2000 12:00 AM3. Files are huge. The 3:25 min. video I submitted was edited in Movie Maker and saved as a WMV at 2mbps and is 52Mb. The original raw 5 minute AVI file at 64kbps was 175 mb.4. The audio is awful but not really an issue for me.The edited video in WMV was as close as I could get to the original. There was only a slight... 5/5 Bill (Oregon) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great gadget for discreet, high-quality video

I do a lot of walking, typically 3 to 6 miles every day from my home to my work, or to nearby businesses. Like most pedestrians, I've had my share of close calls with inattentive and careless drivers. After recently being hit by a car (fortunately, I wasn't too badly hurt), I started looking for a small videocamera that I could wear to record what happened during my walks. The Veho MUVI seemed ideal, and I've now had a couple of days to use it. So here are my impressions:(1) The MUVI is both smaller and heavier than I expected. It came with a rotating clip to hook to the front of my shirt, and a lanyard to wear around my neck. It looks and feels quite sturdy. I wouldn't want to bounce it off a sidewalk, but it definitely feels tough enough to endure normal handling, or being dropped a short distance. It does get warm to the touch while recording.(2) Despite what the product photos on Amazon show, the camera must be mounted or carried vertically, not... 5/5 W. This review is from: Veho VCC-003-MUVI-BLK MUVI Micro digital camcorder for Action Sports/Surveillance (Includes 2Gb Memory) (Camera) Purchased one of these and promptly rigged it up on the tiedown mount of an RV8 aircraft and flew it thru barrel rolls and high speed (200mph+) passes at airport. Camera did a very good job, only a slight pause for some unexplainable, reason (very slight). Handled the lighting variables in good shape. Excellent for the cost, and this is coming from a retired USAF Motion Picture Cameraman who has done several kinds of these applications on higher speed aircraft. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , January 15, 2010
