Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

0 4/5 Matt - See all my reviews This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) Bought one of these and am pretty impressed. super light weight and has all the same mounting hardware as the gopro. Has an lcd color screen to see what your pointed at before you film and for reviewing what you've filmed. One word of caution though. DO NOT USE ANY SD CARD OTHER THAN A CLASS 4 OR 5. If you use any higher class sd card the camera will malfunction when it is hooked up to the computer when attempting to review or transfer.Emerson technical support has already told me that these cameras are a fairly new product and that there is a glich with any sd card higher than class 5. I went through 2 cameras (returned them to the store) before I contacted Emerson and they explained the problem. handles up to 32 gig BUT it has to be a class 4 or 5 only. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2012

    Nearly a GoPro

0 5/5 L.K. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) This action cam is nearly a GoPro and is 1/4 the price. It is plastic, however. Remember when you buy this that it doesn't come with a motocross helmet mount-it comes with a velcro strap mount for a bicycle helmet and a 7/8" handlebar mount. Takes a terrific video, but the sound isn't good at all. Bear in mind that customer service is positively terrible, so you'll just have to deal with the seller. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 2, 2013

Cheap but great waterproof dive cam! Image quality in picture mode is horrible

0 3/5 Somedude "Computer consultants Boston" (Boston MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Southern Telecom Emerson Action Camera Black Digital Cameras (Camera) Doesn't say how deep this case is good for, but for playing in the water in Hawaii (surfing etc) this is great as long as you don't decide to walk on the bottom of the sea (haha)Camera and accessories feel a little bit on the cheap side but works great and quality is good for the price (a cheap alternative to gopro)Also the camera mounts ok to a motorcycle and video is a little bit jumpy because the video isn't image stabilizedAlso as mentioned in a previous review, use a class 4 Micro SD card, if you use anything less or more it will freeze (I put a class 2 card in and it froze right away when recording)Also update: the image quality in picture mode is horrible ... see my picture in the product images .. video quality is good though, just picture mode is horrible (possibly because of no image stabilization) 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 5, 2013

    Great "little" camera

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:25 MinsThis thing is great. I tried the Oregon Scientific ACT3K and the picture quality of the Muvi is far better. The Veho folks aren't doing us or themselves any favors by shipping it with such a sub-standard memory card though. At first I was slightly disappointed until I put in a 4Gb class 2 MicroSDHC card I had lying around. What an improvement. I've got a couple 8Gb class 6 cards on the way so I should be all set. Some things to note:1. Files are limited to 30 minutes at which time it will start a new file.2. For some reason all files are dated 12/31/2000 12:00 AM3. Files are huge. The 3:25 min. video I submitted was edited in Movie Maker and saved as a WMV at 2mbps and is 52Mb. The original raw 5 minute AVI file at 64kbps was 175 mb.4. The audio is awful but not really an issue for me.The edited video in WMV was as close as I could get to the original. A great gadget for discreet, high-quality video

I do a lot of walking, typically 3 to 6 miles every day from my home to my work, or to nearby businesses. Like most pedestrians, I've had my share of close calls with inattentive and careless drivers. After recently being hit by a car (fortunately, I wasn't too badly hurt), I started looking for a small videocamera that I could wear to record what happened during my walks. The Veho MUVI seemed ideal, and I've now had a couple of days to use it. So here are my impressions:(1) The MUVI is both smaller and heavier than I expected. It came with a rotating clip to hook to the front of my shirt, and a lanyard to wear around my neck. It looks and feels quite sturdy. I wouldn't want to bounce it off a sidewalk, but it definitely feels tough enough to endure normal handling, or being dropped a short distance. It does get warm to the touch while recording.(2) Despite what the product photos on Amazon show, the camera must be mounted or carried vertically, not... 5/5 W. I dont have that type of $ to spend on one of those cameras so I decided to try this one. I can say that the video is very good and I like the fact that it has the LCD touch screen so you can actually see what your going to record as the go-pro doesn't have that so it's a guess as to where your camera is pointing and the price is less than 1/3 of the go-pro camera so all in all a great deal for the price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 14, 2013

    Cheap Alternative

I bought this for a rafting trip in Colorado and I couldn't be happier with the results. It is only 720p, but I am not a cinematographer either and I am shooting action highlights with it. Since I found it hard to locate online I will mention here that it's highest resolution is 720p @ 30 frames per second. So if you plan on doing a lot of slow motion this may not be for you as you'll appreciate the higher frame rates of the upper end GoPro models. I have slowed footage down to 1/4 speed and I am completely happy with that myself. I found battery life to be acceptable, I tested it at home and got 1 hour and 10 minutes out of it, and on my rafting trip I got 1:07 all shooting at high res. If you spend a lot of time using the screen you will burn through battery quicker, and it will shut down on you if you attempt playback when the battery is getting exhausted. However, I have noticed that when I cannot playback it will still let me record and I have shot 20 minutes of video when... 5/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) For $50 it is just okay.

I bought the camera on woot (an amazon site) and I misread it thinking it was an older Go Pro (I was on my phone and stopped at a restaurant on my way to Myrtle Beach so, it was an impulse buy). I thought oh, a Go Pro for $50, that's a no brainer! Anyway, I bought the camera and it came with a waterproof housing and a ton of mounts so, I didn't really feel cheated.VIDEO QUALITYThe camera has a 720P max resolution and the results are a bit of a mixed bag. First, it uses a fixed focus 9mm lens with an f/3.1 aperture but, that's good enough for the fixed infinity focus of the lens. Overall, the camera has a bit of an underexposed image (about a third of a stop) which holds highlights fairly well but, it has a very strong vignette so anything not in the center of the lens becomes really grainy and this is being used in daylight at about 5 PM here in Florida (the sunshine state). The built in Mic, is so muffled that I literally cannot hear a thing in the videos... 1/5 Perry (Lutz, Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: Gear-Pro High-Definition Sport Action Camera, 720p Wide-Angle Camcorder With 2.0 Touch Screen - SD Card Slot, USB Plug And Mic - All Mounting Gear Included - For Biking, Riding, Racing, Skiing And Water Sports, Etc. (Electronics) When I first opened the package I was pretty excited. There were plenty of mount options and a few cables for charging as advertised. I took the camera out of the weatherproof case and it turned on and had a working touchscreen.I then turned the unit off and put it back in the case (which I don't think is strictly waterproof - it looked like there was a crack water can get into). I tried to turn the unit back on again via the buttons that are on the case, and it didn't work. Instead of the screen coming on after 3 seconds like the first time, the "busy" light turned on and then nothing else happened. After that, nothing I did would get the busy light to turn off or the screen to turn on.I am returning this product and I don't recommend other people buy it. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 18, 2012

Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. Great Camera for night skating

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:44 MinsThis is a video of a couple of laps around the John Rose Oval shot at 10 PM under artificial lighting. I thought that the images were good with expected wide angle distortion.I purchased this camera to record my speed skating at the John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota. Most of my skating sessions are from 9:20 to 10:25 PM. The lighting is similar to a baseball or football field. I had some concerns about reviews that said that this camera was not that good in low light conditions but the images looked good to me.In terms of ease of use, I don't think you can really beat this camera. The instruction manual is microscopic and you are up to speed on the available controls within a very short period of time. One of the frequent criticisms of the camera is wind noise coming through in the video. It turns out that you can preset the sound level with the software that comes with the camera as a download off the MicroSD card... 5/5 George Dawson (St. Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews, December 5, 2009

I was already biased against the GoPro having owned the original Hero Cam Wide.Mounting--------The quick sliding of the GoPro is pretty simple, but the parts that you have to screw and unscrew are difficult. The screws were hard to tighten and it's too easy to lose the screw and/or nut. I also managed to break one of the mounts by dropping it - a bit too easy to break in my opinion. Getting the correct angle by stringing the screw mounts together was a challenge as well.I like the ContourHD mount a lot more. It just slides on and off and locks into place. Sony Action Cam, GoPro Hero2 or Hero3

(Updated 11/26/2012) I now have GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. This review changes a bit. Although Sony is pretty good, if you can afford $399 action cam, I would go with Hero3 Black Edition. Otherwise continue with my review. If you are OK with the following limitations of the Sony Action Cam, this little Sony Cam is absolutely fantastic. Otherwise, I would go with GoPro Hero 2 or Hero 3 Silver Edition.1. CANNOT RECORD SOUND in 60/120FPS modes. Not that I value sound from any Action Cams inside a case, but no sound can be a deal breaker for some.2. Underwater footage is much worse than GoPro Hero2 in terms of color (Mainly Sony auto white balance does not work underwater). The case of the Sony Action Cam also has a curve lens, so it cannot focus underwater. Sony will release the door pack that includes the flat lens dive door.3. Severe Lens flare. This gives you a sense of the camera's ability... 3/5 SuperDad - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Sony Action Cam vs Hero 2

Overall this is a great product at a great price. The camera captures good detail with accurate white balance, good color and saturation, and sharpness across the field of view. The steady shot works very well, and there is a definite improvement in low light detail and noise compared to competing cameras in this segment of the market. The wifi feature works as advertised and allows easy framing and control of the settings through an IOS or Android smart phone, although it can take a while to browse the content if you have a large number of photos or videos on the card.Pros:White balance and auto exposure are more accurate than the go pro hero HD or Hero 2. The gopros tend to have a warmer white balance and will over expose the sky when a person is slightly back lit. The Sony will slightly under expose back lit subjects and preserve highlight detail in the sky.The 4x slow motion works well and is smooth even when further slowed down in post. The image and... 4/5 joshua - See all my reviews This review is from: Action Video Camera from Sony HDR-AS15 (Black) (Electronics) Overall this is a great product at a great price. Great inexpensive choice for a motorcycle helmet camera.

I bought this helmet camera so that I could record some (point of view) footage on my Honda shadow (750)RS, and potentially protect myself in the unfortunate event of an accident. When I say protect myself, I mean that I would have proof as to what actually happened. The camera angle is not exactly super wide, but it will do for what I need it for. I'm not trying to shoot a panoramic movie...One cool feature is the integrated laser that blinks and shows you where your camera is pointing before you begin recording. I also chose this camera because it does not have a fixed rechargeable battery. In other words, Instead of being unable to use it again until I can plug it in and let it charge for hours, I just pop in two new AAA batteries. BOOM! good to go again. Being that you get about a 1.5-2hr video on this with one set of batteries (and an appropriate size SD card), The camera will most likely go dead if I were to go on a super long ride. So, the standard AAA batteries are a... 4/5 Matt - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: HDE (TM) Action Sports Helmet Camera (Electronics) This is a great product, just not the right use for what I was trying to get. I got it so I could run with it and film while running, I wish it showed what you were filming while you were filming it, but for what it is, it's excellent and it does work great, which is why I rated it so high. I'll try biking with it this summer and see what happens... 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 16, 2013

Solid steady picture with out cam or picture shake

I have gotten a couple of different helmet/bike cams. The problems with them was never could get a solid picture. Was always shaky. With this one, I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent picture, solid, no shaking. Cam must be right side up other wise the picture will be shown sideways or upside down.I am very pleased and would buy another one if needed. The con's::1. setting the settings on the LED at the back of the cam. Seemed that the screen would not take the finger press well. Even tried the eraser on the end of a pencil.2. The built in battery does not last very long on full charge. I was running a 32mg card and as close as I can tell, time is estimated at about 30 min run time. ( I never got that far, but after running for an hour, with several stops, totaling actual run time of 23 minutes, battery indicator shown 1/2 run down.If cam is run in a vehicle, use the mobile charger it comes with to keep the... 4/5 Shawn - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
