Adventure Sports Photography, Creating Dramatic Images in Wild Places

Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

Publisher: Peachpit Press

About this book
This is the eBook version of the printed book. "Adventure Sports Photography," by renowned photographer and workshop leader Tom Bol, combines personal stories from field experience with expert photo technique. Aspiring outdoor photographers, both adventure sports shooters and outdoor photography enthusiasts, will find this book to be a valuable reference and guide. It covers everything an adventure sports shooter needs to know to get the shot-from packing and organizing gear for an afternoon shoot of rock climbing at the local crag to a month-long sea kayaking expedition. You'll explore composition and creative angles for stunning adventure sports images, and learn in-depth techniques for using speedlights and strobes for creative lighting when you're shooting in the field. This book also shows you how to create a sequence shot and set up an effective digital workflow. The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Turn your camera phone into a helmet cam Helmet cams are usually used by the extreme-sports crowd, and they're exactly what they sound like: protective helmets with little video cameras attached. If you want footage from your ...

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

Solid steady picture with out cam or picture shake

I have gotten a couple of different helmet/bike cams. The problems with them was never could get a solid picture. Was always shaky. With this one, I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent picture, solid, no shaking. Cam must be right side up other wise the picture will be shown sideways or upside down.I am very pleased and would buy another one if needed. The con's::1. setting the settings on the LED at the back of the cam. Seemed that the screen would not take the finger press well. Even tried the eraser on the end of a pencil.2. The built in battery does not last very long on full charge. I was running a 32mg card and as close as I can tell, time is estimated at about 30 min run time. However, when you factor in price, this Gear-Pro product provides an excellent value for those of us who wish to capture some of life's moments on video.I'm very impressed that the box includes so many accessories at this price point - waterproof case, camera shield, car charger, and three different mounts (suction cup, handlebar seapost, helmet mount). 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 26, 2014

    Decent Kid's Action Camera

The Action Shot camera is decent kid's starter camcorder for capturing fun moments in motion with minimum of effort to get started. The video quality captured in VGA mode is decent but in QVGA the video quality is very good and clear however pictures captured in Photo Mode are grainy and most of the time unclear. This camcorder does not work well in low light situations for video or pictures. There aren't many buttons on the Action Shot camera keeping it simple to use with just two buttons. Once you get the hang of the buttons it's easy to use. The only thing that I feel this camcorder is lacking is a viewer because it's feels limiting not being able to see what the camera is recording or has recorded. Grant it the Action Shot camera would most of the times be mounted to a helmet, bike or some other devices following the action so the need to see what it being recorded isn't need then but it would be nice if while holding it a person could see what is being... 4/5 Donna (US) - See all my reviews = Durability:, April 14, 2013

Surprisingly good video quality for a sports cam in this price range

Customer Video Review Length:: 9:42 MinsPlease note that my review is for the XS100, not the XS100i which has WiFi. For some reason the seller has put my review of the XS100 under both the XS100 and the XS110i product which is confusing to people.---The Polaroid XS100 impressed me in many ways with its image quality and usability. My video review will cover most everything but I'll highlight a few things here.I also own the GoPro Hero3 Black. Although the video quality of the Polaroid isn't quite as good as the GoPro, it's pretty darn good especially when you take the price into consideration. In fact, unless you were able to directly compare the GoPro video to the Polaroid video in a direct A-B comparison, as I was able to do, you'd think the Polaroid quality was excellent... and it is very good indeed, just the colors are a bit off (I've included still photo from the Polaroid and one from my GoPro to illustrate the color issue at the end of my video review) and... 4/5 M. Takes good video and decent sound: apart from a few solvable issues this is a pretty good lower-end action camera

This is a relatively inexpensive entry into the "Action Camera" market - that takes fairly good video, and is worthwhile once you get used to it, but it is not entirely intuitive. After playing around with this for nearly a month, I think I'm pretty familiar with it, and will describe what I like and don't like about it in some detail below. I hope that all this detail is helpful. I do have experience with some of the higher-end action camcorders out there, so I'm basing my description in part on knowing what's possible. Still, this is significantly less expensive than most similar items out there, and still does a pretty good job.The video -As I'll explain below there are a few, fixable, bugs in the software, and it's not entirely intuitive in its button design. Once you get through the hurdle of figuring it out (or, if you don't care about changing settings and ignore the software entirely), you can record fairly good photos and video with it. Great POV and Action Camera

This is my first Contour camera, and I was lucky that just at the time I decided to get one, the new ROAM 2 came out. The reason I like the ROAM2 over the original ROAM (which can now be had much cheaper) is for the 60 fps filming in 720p. This will produce smoother video, especially if you like to use slow motion effects now and then. The ROAM 2 comes in attractive packaging and includes: 1 profile mount; 1 rotating flat surface mount; lanyard tether; USB cable; lens cap; 4GB MicroSD card; storage pouch and lens cloth.Initial tests of the ROAM 2 in 720p @ 60fps and full HD 1080p @ 30fps are very impressive. At 720p you will have a view angle of 170 degrees, which gives you a wide panorama but some fisheye effect (to be expected at that width). In 1080p the view angle is reduced to 125 degrees, which still gives a nice wide view, but much less fisheye. The quality of the video image is very good. In full 1080p it is ultra-sharp and the colors are very good. The... 5/5 Justin Opinion (USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2012

    Roam2 vs +2 review

This is a dual review, as I own both the Contour + 2 and the Contour Roam2. I don't work for nor do I have any affiliation with Contour. I've had the Roam2 for more than 6 months, but held off writing this review until I had the +2 to compare it to. Although I don't own a GoPro, several friends do and I do their video editing so I'll chime in on the Contour vs. GoPro at the end.MOUNTS:Contour uses the same proprietary mounts across their lineup, so interchangeability between the two should be fairly easy (but doesn't always work out that way). I've found some to be flimsy(hat mount), while others are damn near bomb proof(suction cup)! The rotating lens means you can mount it in just about any position, however it is difficult to know that you've framed the shot with the correct orientation! Had an important video recorded upside down - laser level only lets you know it's level, not if it's upside down! 60fps As requested by our users, we've bumped up the frames per second to 60, meaning you can now get that smooth video quality you've come to expect from Contour cameras.
Vibrant color options We understand that style matters and color can make or break a look. Match your kit, or bring in a little contrast by adding a ContourROAM2 in one of four colors: Contour green, red, blue or traditional black.
Locking Instant On-Record Switch No power button, no problem. Simply slide the Instant On-Record switch into its locking position to ensure you shoot exactly when you're ready.
