Adventure Sports Photography, Creating Dramatic Images in Wild Places

Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

Publisher: Peachpit Press

About this book
This is the eBook version of the printed book. "Adventure Sports Photography," by renowned photographer and workshop leader Tom Bol, combines personal stories from field experience with expert photo technique. Aspiring outdoor photographers, both adventure sports shooters and outdoor photography enthusiasts, will find this book to be a valuable reference and guide. It covers everything an adventure sports shooter needs to know to get the shot-from packing and organizing gear for an afternoon shoot of rock climbing at the local crag to a month-long sea kayaking expedition. You'll explore composition and creative angles for stunning adventure sports images, and learn in-depth techniques for using speedlights and strobes for creative lighting when you're shooting in the field. The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

Surprisingly good video quality for a sports cam in this price range

Customer Video Review Length:: 9:42 MinsPlease note that my review is for the XS100, not the XS100i which has WiFi. For some reason the seller has put my review of the XS100 under both the XS100 and the XS110i product which is confusing to people.---The Polaroid XS100 impressed me in many ways with its image quality and usability. My video review will cover most everything but I'll highlight a few things here.I also own the GoPro Hero3 Black. Although the video quality of the Polaroid isn't quite as good as the GoPro, it's pretty darn good especially when you take the price into consideration. In fact, unless you were able to directly compare the GoPro video to the Polaroid video in a direct A-B comparison, as I was able to do, you'd think the Polaroid quality was excellent... and it is very good indeed, just the colors are a bit off (I've included still photo from the Polaroid and one from my GoPro to illustrate the color issue at the end of my video review) and... 4/5 M. Fun! Small, pretty good video

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:48 MinsThis Amazon listing combines Polaroid cameras with and without Wifi. My reivew is is for Polaroid XS100 (the option without Wi Fi).This 6 oz video camera is fun to use and produced pretty good video. I am attaching a video taken with the camera and 6 photos of the camera itself to illustrate my review.I took Polaroid XS100 camera with me on a weekend trip and recorded video snippets through the entire day. I made about 2 hours of recording (on a single charge battery charge). The attached video contains four clips took during this trip in various lighting conditions.✔ Driving in the carNote when the sun hits the camera you can see a bit of a halo from the dome that covers the lens. The anti-vibration feature of the camera is very effective in the car.✔ In bright day lightExcellent color and sharpness especially when the sun is behind✔ Inside a storeWorked well... 5/5 Ali Julia (boston, mass) - See all my reviews, April 9, 2013

Takes good video and decent sound: apart from a few solvable issues this is a pretty good lower-end action camera

This is a relatively inexpensive entry into the "Action Camera" market - that takes fairly good video, and is worthwhile once you get used to it, but it is not entirely intuitive. After playing around with this for nearly a month, I think I'm pretty familiar with it, and will describe what I like and don't like about it in some detail below. I hope that all this detail is helpful. I do have experience with some of the higher-end action camcorders out there, so I'm basing my description in part on knowing what's possible. Still, this is significantly less expensive than most similar items out there, and still does a pretty good job.The video -As I'll explain below there are a few, fixable, bugs in the software, and it's not entirely intuitive in its button design. Once you get through the hurdle of figuring it out (or, if you don't care about changing settings and ignore the software entirely), you can record fairly good photos and video with it. As far as that... 4/5 Nathan Andersen "Gadget lover and author of S... (Florida) - See all my reviews, April 21, 2013

    Tachyon Ops HD GunCam Review

First impressions: The first thing I thought as I opened the box and held it in my hand was how small it is, the second was how well made it is. My intent for the camera was to use it as a gun cam -- mounted on my hunting rifle. I've used 3 other cameras for this purpose in the last year, and of the 4 cameras, the Tachyon camera is by far the smallest (roughly 1/3 the size of the second smallest), and most well built. Of the previous 3 cameras, one felt like it was made in the Soviet era 80s, the other just felt flat out cheap, and the 3rd was pretty decent, but not as well made as this.Further observations: It struck me that the major difference between the 4 cameras, the other 3 cameras were made around the parts -- i.e. the developers had the parts, and kind of made the camera around those parts. The Tachyon camera feels like it was specifically engineered for a task, and those parts were designed to fit inside the parameters of that task. For example, the... 5/5 Tatman - See all my reviews This review is from: Tachyon OPS HD Helmet Camera (Electronics) First impressions: The first thing I thought as I opened the box and held it in my hand was how small it is, the second was how well made it is. You get what you pay for

This is a low cost, simple to operate, digital camcorder that's claimed to be "high-def". It may record 1280x720 video, but the quality is not very high; the geometric resolution is probably like DVD level, and the image fidelity (brightness, contrast, noise, color resolution) is a little better than cell phone quality. I don't have the equipment to make quantitative measurements, so these are just eyeball comparisons against other camcorders I have.I used this a couple times to record various settings and a couple of my bike commutes. I combined two of its included mounting hardware to make one that worked better on my helmet. The first thing I noticed was that panning the camera, even at very slow speeds, causes the images to flicker, and sometimes tear. It's as if the image processor does not have enough power to deal with this many pixels at 30 fps. So for example, the effective resolution was so poor that I had a really hard time reading license plates of cars... 3/5 Mountain Dewd (Pasadena, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Tachyon OPS HD Helmet Camera (Electronics) This is a low cost, simple to operate, digital camcorder that's claimed to be "high-def". This review is from: HD Metal Firefighter Camera Helmet Cam Fireproof 120 Degree Wide Angle (Camera) Husband is a fireman and once a year goes for live training. It is not as waterproof as they would have hoped. It does give good video when it is working. After it was exposed to water it would cut out. Each day they had to dry it out and after that it would work again for a time. It attaches nicely to a helmet. It does pick up their voices discussing their plan of attack. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , August 28, 2013

False Advertisment, this is not a true Firefighter camera(review based off use for fire service)

First I will tell you the main picture or primary picture for the description is not what you will receive. The main picture is of a product called FIRECAM , the camera i received was a 2mp action camera. it has glass in the front which is a huge issue for anything to di with fire because fire causes heat which then cause the lens to fog up.I got this camera and decided to give it a try, during a brush fire. During the call I thought I was filming 45 minutes of action based upon me turning it on. What I found when i got home was a camera that wouldn't turn back on, when I put the mini sd card into my computer it only filmed 3 minutes of footage which 2.5 minutes were unmatchable due to the lens fogging up.The other issue I see with this camera is the video quality, the 30 seconds of clear video i did have was pixelated and blurry. This camera might be good for someone but I can't use it as training videos for my fire department, the quality is poor... 1/5 a j krysiewicz - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Decent Kid's Action Camera

The Action Shot camera is decent kid's starter camcorder for capturing fun moments in motion with minimum of effort to get started. The video quality captured in VGA mode is decent but in QVGA the video quality is very good and clear however pictures captured in Photo Mode are grainy and most of the time unclear. This camcorder does not work well in low light situations for video or pictures. There aren't many buttons on the Action Shot camera keeping it simple to use with just two buttons. Once you get the hang of the buttons it's easy to use. The only thing that I feel this camcorder is lacking is a viewer because it's feels limiting not being able to see what the camera is recording or has recorded. Grant it the Action Shot camera would most of the times be mounted to a helmet, bike or some other devices following the action so the need to see what it being recorded isn't need then but it would be nice if while holding it a person could see what is being... 4/5 Donna (US) - See all my reviews = Durability:, April 14, 2013
