Adventure Sports Photography, Creating Dramatic Images in Wild Places

Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

There are other methods of creating POV images that don't require a magic arm but do require a helmet. Affectionately known as the helmet-cam angle, this shot looks right down the arms of the rider from atop his head.

Publisher: Peachpit Press

About this book
This is the eBook version of the printed book. "Adventure Sports Photography," by renowned photographer and workshop leader Tom Bol, combines personal stories from field experience with expert photo technique. Aspiring outdoor photographers, both adventure sports shooters and outdoor photography enthusiasts, will find this book to be a valuable reference and guide. The Camera Phone Book, Secrets to Making Better PicturesPhotography Series

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Turn your camera phone into a helmet cam Helmet cams are usually used by the extreme-sports crowd, and they're exactly what they sound like: protective helmets with little video cameras attached. If you want footage from your ...

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

    Better than the competition

The video this little camera produces is beyond comparison, true 1080p HD 16:9 video. For the price you get a very good product. Additional, separately purchased mounting accessories allow the user many options. It is true that you don't get a user manual, but that takes less then a minute to download from the Midland website. I use this camera to record my daily commute to work and I get plenty of good video of bad drivers. The main reason for recording your commutes (even to the grocery store) is protection. If an accident occurs, there is no doubt what happened, you have it recorded. Being able to have the Police view the video on there patrol computer at the accident scene greatly helps when determining who was at fault (just make sure it wasn't you). Doesn't get 5-stars because the USB cable is way to short and does not come with a vehicle charging adapter. Although a vehicle charger adapter is available from Midland, you will need to find a longer USB cable from another... 4/5 S. Morrison "Steven M." (East Coast) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2014

    A surprisingly great little camera

I was looking for a helmet cam but didn't want to pay three hundred dollars, so I gave this one a try. It doesn't seem to have a way to set the time and date, but I do that with the video when it is on my computer. I mounted it on a half helmet with the mounting stick on pad they include and it sets well adjusts well and holds it's position. I wore it on a helmet in my truck to the airport this January to pick someone up from the Pittsburgh airport. There was a blizzard going on and I drove from late afternoon daylight to darkness on the way back. It adjusted for light and dark, car headlights, street lights, and natural daylight in a great way. The picture was clear no graininess in a downpour of snow by my truck headlights. The resulting film looked just like the actual scenes and lighting was in reality. For the price this is one great little camera. It comes with a waterproof clear case, a mounting bracket with Velcro sticky pad and sticky glue pads to attach it to your surface... 5/5 Karlitos - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Why Buy GoPro when the XTC280 is SO DARN GOOD ???

0 5/5 SanPa (MPLS, MN USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Midland XTC280VP1080p HD Wearable Action Camera with Image Stabilization, Submersible Case and Universal Mount (Black/Silver) (Electronics) GoPro at 1/3rd the price. Quite solid construction with a great accompaniment of accessories. The optical stabilization feature is quite impressive. No WiFi feature ... Big deal. My planned use was as a dash cam, but it seems like I'll buy an extra battery ... and put the camera to fun uses as well: like attaching it to the bow or stern of my sons's boat, attaching it to a riding helmet, and attaching it to the front of my daughter's ATV. Seriously ... this little bugger is so good and well priced, that I am wondering if shorting GoPro's stock might in fact be a great investment opportunity. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , July 3, 2014

    Great Cam! With issues....

Let me start by saying that this cam makes great, clear video. It lasts beyond the rated 2hrs. using rechargeable batts. An 8gb card gives about 1:50 of record time, @ 2gb per 30 mins. A 16gb card would let you max out the batt. life. I gave it 4 stars for a few small(sort of) issues. The mounting systems have limited adjustment, and very limited instructions. The H.bar mount sits very high, and has no provision for screw tightening, you pull it tight like a tie-wrap. The helmet and goggle strap mounts require bending a plastic tab, and pulling the base completely out of the mount to adjust the vert. angle, something near impossible to do if you're already wearing it. You need eyes on to do it right, and not break it. The stick-on helmet mount has no side to side adjustment, so you better get it pointed right on the first try. It also has very limited tilt range, so it almost has to be where the goggle strap goes anyway. There's no provision for top mounting, only side... 4/5 A. This review is from: Midland XTC100VP2 640 x 480 Standard Definition Extreme Action Camera with 4 types of Mounts Included (Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Electronics) This is very cheap compared to every other action camera out there. And what do you give up? Not a whole lot.Cons:It is not totally waterproof, but after a lot of ski days, it has no issuesThe files it creates are huge - about 70mb/minPros:Comes with lots of mounts, the goggle mount works greatImage quality is very very good. People hear "HD" and think that is what matters. Really, the lens, image processor, white balance, contrast etc etc matter more, and they are really good on this little guy.Small and light. I have used the GoPro HD and its like skiing with a weight on one side of your head.$77!! Its so much cheaper than your other options - which also charge for mounts. This is a great little camera. Originally bought for my little bro for skiing, we have been both using it, and I will be getting another one for me shortly. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , February 5, 2011

meh, should have spent more on a better camera

I use this with my dual sport motorcycle. First the helmet strap isn't long enough to go around a helmet so I had to use the sticker mount. That worked fine. Next, the unit I got was an open box return and the usb port was messed up. They sent me a new one. No problem. Then I got to actually take it out and use it and here is what I found out.Going faster than 10mph it picks up the wind noise so bad you have to mute the sound. Also picks up a horrible high pitch whistle. The video looks passable when you watch it at its native size but if you expand it to full screen on your computer or TV you can't pick out any details. Everything is very pixelated. Which since it is I think 640X480 that is what you can expect.Colors are washed out too. I kept saying to myself " I can't wait to get home and show the kids my video of how beautiful it is here" and then I get home and it is just crappy video quality. I am going to save up for a go-pro. Spy Tec

Form Factor - Yes, Functionality - Not so much

Caveats: I purchased the SJ1000 from Spy Tec but the SJ2000 from another vendor. Spy Tec offers much faster US shipping in my experience. I would recommend the purchasing via Amazon/Spy Tec despite the slightly higher price.Accessories:The accessories are very similar in quality to the SJ1000's. It comes with a couple of cheap plastic mounts for handlebars or dash mounting. The cylindrical form factor of the SJ2000 and lack of external waterproof case make the use of these accessories less enticing to me. I plan on simply using the included velcro cinch straps to secure the SJ2000 to something.User Manual: The manual is written slightly better English than the SJ1000 but is still equally useless; perhaps even more so since the camera has one function button. The manual inadequately, even incorrectly, explains how to set the camera time, which is really the only thing that isn't intuitive. To set the time, I had to google around to find how time is... 4/5 B Jones "-B" - See all my reviews This review is from: SJ2000 Full HD 1080p H.264 Waterproof Action Helmet Motorcycle Bike Camera with 170 Degree Wide Angle Lens (Electronics) Caveats: I purchased the SJ1000 from Spy Tec but the SJ2000 from another vendor. Great "little" camera

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:25 MinsThis thing is great. I tried the Oregon Scientific ACT3K and the picture quality of the Muvi is far better. The Veho folks aren't doing us or themselves any favors by shipping it with such a sub-standard memory card though. At first I was slightly disappointed until I put in a 4Gb class 2 MicroSDHC card I had lying around. What an improvement. I've got a couple 8Gb class 6 cards on the way so I should be all set. Some things to note:1. Files are limited to 30 minutes at which time it will start a new file.2. For some reason all files are dated 12/31/2000 12:00 AM3. Files are huge. The 3:25 min. video I submitted was edited in Movie Maker and saved as a WMV at 2mbps and is 52Mb. The original raw 5 minute AVI file at 64kbps was 175 mb.4. The audio is awful but not really an issue for me.The edited video in WMV was as close as I could get to the original. There was only a slight... 5/5 Bill (Oregon) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great gadget for discreet, high-quality video

I do a lot of walking, typically 3 to 6 miles every day from my home to my work, or to nearby businesses. Like most pedestrians, I've had my share of close calls with inattentive and careless drivers. After recently being hit by a car (fortunately, I wasn't too badly hurt), I started looking for a small videocamera that I could wear to record what happened during my walks. The Veho MUVI seemed ideal, and I've now had a couple of days to use it. So here are my impressions:(1) The MUVI is both smaller and heavier than I expected. It came with a rotating clip to hook to the front of my shirt, and a lanyard to wear around my neck. It looks and feels quite sturdy. I wouldn't want to bounce it off a sidewalk, but it definitely feels tough enough to endure normal handling, or being dropped a short distance. It does get warm to the touch while recording.(2) Despite what the product photos on Amazon show, the camera must be mounted or carried vertically, not... 5/5 W.
