Creator: Tom Bol | Photography - 2011-11-21

Creator: Aimee Baldridge | Photography - 2007-05-15

Publisher: National Geographic

About this book
Marketing experts predict that by 2009, nearly 90% of all cell phones will contain a camera, as manufacturers race to create cheaper, easier-to-use models with more sophisticated cameras, more pixels, flash units and even multiple lenses. Already revolutionizing audiovisual communication, it's a trend that will only grow more explosively—and who better than National Geographic to create a how-to book aimed directly at the millions who carry a camera phone everywhere and want to make the most of it?Created by two top professionals, this generously illustrated nuts-and-bolts guide is the first of its kind to treat these units as genuine cameras instead of novelties, and the only one to include a full-color photo-essay demonstrating the full capabilities of the latest camera phones. In five easy-to-read chapters, the book explains how to choose good equipment; take better pictures; and store, print and send the best images. Readers will find practical tips on preventing or repairing water damage, protecting easily-scratched lenses inside pockets and purses, and retrieving accidentally-erased images. They'll also learn to access the events, advice, and opportunities of the burgeoning camera phone community, from film festivals to news organizations, moblogs, and more.Featuring the technical savvy of CNet.com's Aimee Baldridge and the creative skill of National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a camera phone pioneer, this compact yet comprehensive reference combines up-to-the-minute expertise with superb examples, at an inexpensive price that makes it a perfect gift book—or an ideal impulse buy.

    Great POV and Action Camera

This is my first Contour camera, and I was lucky that just at the time I decided to get one, the new ROAM 2 came out. The reason I like the ROAM2 over the original ROAM (which can now be had much cheaper) is for the 60 fps filming in 720p. This will produce smoother video, especially if you like to use slow motion effects now and then. The ROAM 2 comes in attractive packaging and includes: 1 profile mount; 1 rotating flat surface mount; lanyard tether; USB cable; lens cap; 4GB MicroSD card; storage pouch and lens cloth.Initial tests of the ROAM 2 in 720p @ 60fps and full HD 1080p @ 30fps are very impressive. At 720p you will have a view angle of 170 degrees, which gives you a wide panorama but some fisheye effect (to be expected at that width). In 1080p the view angle is reduced to 125 degrees, which still gives a nice wide view, but much less fisheye. The quality of the video image is very good. In full 1080p it is ultra-sharp and the colors are very good. The... 5/5 Justin Opinion (USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2012

Form and functionality meet with a river in the middle

After returning my Hero3 black for various reasons, I decided to save a few bucks and try out the Contour ROAM2 instead. While not directly competitive of the hero3 Black, I felt that the price point and form factor would be better suited to my primary need as a motorcycle helmet cam. Prior to purchase, I honestly spent more time reading reviews of the Contour+2 than I did the ROAM2, but opted for the cheaper ROAM2 instead. That decision came back to bite me. Roam2 vs +2 review

This is a dual review, as I own both the Contour + 2 and the Contour Roam2. I don't work for nor do I have any affiliation with Contour. I've had the Roam2 for more than 6 months, but held off writing this review until I had the +2 to compare it to. Although I don't own a GoPro, several friends do and I do their video editing so I'll chime in on the Contour vs. GoPro at the end.MOUNTS:Contour uses the same proprietary mounts across their lineup, so interchangeability between the two should be fairly easy (but doesn't always work out that way). I've found some to be flimsy(hat mount), while others are damn near bomb proof(suction cup)! The rotating lens means you can mount it in just about any position, however it is difficult to know that you've framed the shot with the correct orientation! Had an important video recorded upside down - laser level only lets you know it's level, not if it's upside down! Vibrant color options We understand that style matters and color can make or break a look. Match your kit, or bring in a little contrast by adding a ContourROAM2 in one of four colors: Contour green, red, blue or traditional black.
Waterproof without a case Good things come in small packages. The ContourROAM2 sheds bulk by working underwater without an extra case.
60fps As requested by our users, we've bumped up the frames per second to 60, meaning you can now get that smooth video quality you've come to expect from Contour cameras.

    Basic and affordable 👍

0 5/5 Jlinn "JoHeezy" - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro HERO (Electronics) I went and purchased this camera two days after it came out. I am new to the GoPro cams but I have done plenty of research on the cameras. Although this camera might not be the best out of there line, it sure did meet my needs and of course, my tight budget. It is super basic, even I knew how to work it, without even having held a GoPro before in my life . For the little filming here and there that I do, this little thing fits the bill forsure. One con is that the camera is non-removable from the case. Even though I knew about it before I purchased it, I didn't think I would mind. Now with using it, and knowing if the case breaks then basically the camera breaks, makes me a little more cautious then I would be with say one of the other Heros that I can simply just replace the case on. So besides being a little more protective of this Hero, I love the camera. For someone who wants something basic, super affordable, clear pics/vids, or for an extra camera on hand, it is perfect. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 9, 2014

you really can capture a lot of great video at great specs

My buddy works for these guys and i got to see this one weekend. This changes the whole "action" based camera scene. At a measly $129, you really can capture a lot of great video at great specs. Obvious draw backs, Internal battery (cannot remove so you will have to do with about 1.5hrs of video at a time before plugging in), no remote capabilities even though the go pro remote is grossly overpriced, around $80. I originally found it annoying not having a remote to trigger the camera. but with the different shutter speeds you really don't mind. But if you want the interchangeable batteries for longer usage while out, and having a remote. Get the go pro 3 silver or white edition. white edition is only $199, so for $70 more you can start to alleviate some of these pains.I think this camera is great for back ups for professionals or for concert go-ers on a budget looking to capture great video and pictures at a low price from a renowned company. Great underwater performance

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:05 MinsHere's a short clip of how well the GoPro Hero performed underwater for me. This was taken at 1080 30fps. This is my first GoPro, so I cannot compare to the more expensive ones, but I'm definitely happy with the results. Some concerns I've read about in other reviews:1. Limited storage capacity (32GB max): This isn't an issue for me since the camera reports that it will record over 4hrs at 720 60fps. If you're planning on taking videos to share with friends and post on YouTube, I think 720 is plenty.2. Short batter life: Potentially true. I took ~170 short video clips throughout the day, and the battery made it all the way through. It died early the next day. One concern though, I don't remember seeing the battery indicator going down. I think it went from showing "full" to "empty" instantly, but I could be wrong.3. No wifi: Since I didn't mount the camera to a fixed object (like a car or bike), I did not have a need to... 5/5 Serge (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews This review is from: GoPro HERO (Electronics), October 20, 2014

This review is from: Waterproof Mini Full Hd 1080p Sport Helmet Bike Camera Dv Action DVR Video Cam (Electronics) I've used it once, mounted on my handlebar. I haven't figured out how to attach it on my bike helmet. The instructions are pretty oblique as the translation from Chinese to English was pretty hard to figure out. Picture/video quality was quite good as was the sound. I have no data on the length of battery life nor how long a ride my 8GB TF card will hold. I suspect that I'll have to get a higher capacity card. The price was exceptionally low. Although the video quality of the Polaroid isn't quite as good as the GoPro, it's pretty darn good especially when you take the price into consideration. In fact, unless you were able to directly compare the GoPro video to the Polaroid video in a direct A-B comparison, as I was able to do, you'd think the Polaroid quality was excellent... and it is very good indeed, just the colors are a bit off (I've included still photo from the Polaroid and one from my GoPro to illustrate the color issue at the end of my video review) and... 4/5 M. Fun! Small, pretty good video

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:48 MinsThis Amazon listing combines Polaroid cameras with and without Wifi. My reivew is is for Polaroid XS100 (the option without Wi Fi).This 6 oz video camera is fun to use and produced pretty good video. I am attaching a video taken with the camera and 6 photos of the camera itself to illustrate my review.I took Polaroid XS100 camera with me on a weekend trip and recorded video snippets through the entire day. I made about 2 hours of recording (on a single charge battery charge). The attached video contains four clips took during this trip in various lighting conditions.✔ Driving in the carNote when the sun hits the camera you can see a bit of a halo from the dome that covers the lens. The anti-vibration feature of the camera is very effective in the car.✔ In bright day lightExcellent color and sharpness especially when the sun is behind✔ Inside a storeWorked well... 5/5 Ali Julia (boston, mass) - See all my reviews, April 9, 2013

Takes good video and decent sound: apart from a few solvable issues this is a pretty good lower-end action camera

This is a relatively inexpensive entry into the "Action Camera" market - that takes fairly good video, and is worthwhile once you get used to it, but it is not entirely intuitive. After playing around with this for nearly a month, I think I'm pretty familiar with it, and will describe what I like and don't like about it in some detail below. I hope that all this detail is helpful. I do have experience with some of the higher-end action camcorders out there, so I'm basing my description in part on knowing what's possible. Still, this is significantly less expensive than most similar items out there, and still does a pretty good job.The video -As I'll explain below there are a few, fixable, bugs in the software, and it's not entirely intuitive in its button design. Once you get through the hurdle of figuring it out (or, if you don't care about changing settings and ignore the software entirely), you can record fairly good photos and video with it. As far as that... 4/5 Nathan Andersen "Gadget lover and author of S... (Florida) - See all my reviews, April 21, 2013

Dirty Jobs uses this where big cams dont go /great 2nd angle cam

Update 9-16-2010 This is no longer their top of the line cam - the new one is based on this camera but includes a GPS and tags your images with location. You'll need their viewer to see the map movement as the video plays.Update: 7-2010Tonights episode of Dirty Jobs showed this camera strapped to a head strap for the host, Mike Rowe, who was 408 feet above the cement floor decending & window cleaning in Hawaii. Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. The quality was as good as the cable company could deliver in their 6:1 re-compression of HD. A full HD viewfinderless camera has value when you must get the shot.using a sandisk 16GB microSD card and the maximum detail [1080P] + best quality I... 4/5 HMMWV "God, Country, Corps" (santa clara, CA USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2009

    Great point of view camera

I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. I'll update the review once motorsport season comes around. With the GoPro HD and ContourHD 1080p coming out around he same time for the same price point I did a lot of research on both. I was already biased against the GoPro having owned the original Hero Cam Wide.Mounting--------The quick sliding of the GoPro is pretty simple, but the parts that you have to screw and unscrew are difficult. The screws were hard to tighten and it's too easy to lose the screw and/or nut. I also managed to break one of the mounts by dropping it - a bit too easy to break in my opinion. Getting the correct angle by stringing the screw mounts together was a challenge as well.I like the ContourHD mount a lot more. It just slides on and off and locks into place. While skiing, I was able to slide it off and... 4/5 PR (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews This review is from: ContourHD 1080p Helmet Camera (Camera) I bought this camera primarily to be used for motorsports (autocross, track days, time attack, etc.) but took it on my recent ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado. Great Camera for night skating

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:44 MinsThis is a video of a couple of laps around the John Rose Oval shot at 10 PM under artificial lighting. I thought that the images were good with expected wide angle distortion.I purchased this camera to record my speed skating at the John Rose Oval in Roseville, Minnesota. Most of my skating sessions are from 9:20 to 10:25 PM. The lighting is similar to a baseball or football field. I had some concerns about reviews that said that this camera was not that good in low light conditions but the images looked good to me.In terms of ease of use, I don't think you can really beat this camera. The instruction manual is microscopic and you are up to speed on the available controls within a very short period of time. One of the frequent criticisms of the camera is wind noise coming through in the video. It turns out that you can preset the sound level with the software that comes with the camera as a download off the MicroSD card... 5/5 George Dawson (St. Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews, December 5, 2009
